A furious no-confidence vote against the government has turned the spotlight on Sonia Gandhi, the Italian-born opposition leader who wants to be prime minister of a country that has never quite accepted her as one of its own.
Outnumbered in parliament, she predictably lost her attempt to sanction Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Nonetheless, analysts said that her strong performance might have cemented her leadership of Congress - India's oldest political party dominated by the tragedy-struck Nehru-Gandhi clan into which she married.
