BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) - Argentina's economy kept up a strong recovery through the end of 2004 with early data Wednesday showing the country's gross domestic product rose 9.2 per cent from a year earlier.
The government statistics agency, INDEC, found the economy grew an accumulated total of 8.8 per cent for all of 2004 in its preliminary report.
While final GDP figures for 2004 won't be available until next month, the early findings met independent projections that 2004 growth would exceed eight per cent.
The report helps fuel optimism that the economic uptick will continue after a 2002 financial crisis unleashed by years of heavy government spending and borrowing. That, coupled with street riots and political turmoil, led to a record $100 billion US Argentine public debt default. Argentina is South America's second-largest economy.
