One dead in clashes in Indonesia's Papua - police

TIMIKA, Indonesia, Aug 25 (Reuters) - One person was
killed and several wounded in clashes over the creation of a
new province on Indonesia's remote Papua island,
witnesses and police said on Monday.

Clashes began over the weekend outside official buildings in
Timika, seat of the newly created government of Central
Irian Jaya province some 3,400 km (2,100 miles) east of
Jakarta, Timika Police Chief Paulus Waterpauw told Reuters.
"Currently I am in the middle of fighting. They are using
arrows right now," he said by telephone. He said one person
had been killed on Sunday, but gave no details.
