Chimp attack thwarted by handgun
Edited on Sun Mar-06-05 07:53 PM by RoeBear

Chealander told The Bakersfield Californian that besides the damage to his face, Davis had his testicles and foot mauled off. Buddy, a 16-year-old male chimp, initiated the attack and after he was shot, Ollie, a 13-year-old male, grabbed the gravely injured man and dragged him down the road, according to Chealander.

"Everybody was trying to get the chimp off," Chealander said.

The son-in-law of the sanctuary's owners used a .45-caliber handgun to kill the out-of-control chimps, Chealander said.

Any chance that this event will help CA get shall issue CCW? O8)

5. Damn! I thought this was an assination thread!
Good thing there was a pistol handy. Too bad there wasn't a locked padlock on the cage.

Can you say sued until their dreas have a lien on them? I'll wager that the state and animal welfare are named as co-defendants. Can't say I'd blame the obvious plaintiffs.

7. CA will only get a look at shall issue when
a certain unnamed senator is muffled. Her pull will keep her one of the select few for as long as possible.

8. I see on your application...
That you indicated a need for protection against animals at the shelter.

Are you some kind of gun-nut?

12. Probably won't help with CCW...
...but I bet it will help with the assault chimp ban (ACB).

I've been wanting to visit the zoo to check out the monkeys, but I'm feeling extremely ambivalent toward the primates after this story...

13. Did a little research.
Moe probably should have been put down rather than locked up. He attacked the woman mentioned in the article. What the article didn't mention was the $250,000 in medical bills incurred by a cop as a result of another attack by Moe. No Moe, no visit, no attack on a retired NASCAR driver.

That being said, the shelter owner is greatly at fault for the attack. The chimps involved in the attack obviously were not properly secured whether because of an oversight in cage design or by improperly securing their cage.

I have nothing to base this assumption on, but I sincerely doubt that this is the first attack by the marauding chimp(s). If there were previous atttacks, they should have been put down as well.

14. sidenote on ammo used
The shooter had to reload. The first ammo he had did little damage. Needed the JHP's. Hardball passed through.

15. horrors!

As for whether this incident will boost the likelihood of California instituting CCW, I rather suspect that the outcome will be a push for stricter chimp control (or more exotic pet control in general, or whatever).
