Man stops friend's suicide attempt, shoots self while trying to unload gun

Albertini, 28, told Cowlitz County sheriff's deputies that he, Ambrosia M. Rodriguez, 18 of Kelso, and Jay Dee Powell Jr., 18, of Longview were in a pickup shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday when Powell held a 9mm semiautomatic pistol to his own head. Albertini said he grabbed the weapon from Powell, then attempted to unload it when it accidentally fired.

The bullet went through Albertini's left wrist, causing a slight fracture, then into his left upper leg, deputies said. Most of the bullet is lodged in his leg. Neither Powell nor Rodriguez, who was driving, were injured.

Staff at St. John Medical Center alerted law enforcement when Albertini came to the emergency room. After learning that Powell allegedly left with the weapon, police began looking for him.

Longview police located Powell at around 1 p.m. Friday and took him to the sheriff's office for questioning regarding the shooting and an earlier hit-and-run accident in which he reportedly was the driver.
