The Remington 700 PSS in .308 Winchester.

Yes police use them for sniping. Why? It's not because it is black. It's because it is accurate! Probably the most accurate production rifle there is right out of the box. Is there something wrong with a rifle that is so accurate that the shooter can hit what he aims at? That is the whole point!

Want to hunt with one? Go for it. I do. Wish me luck on whitetails this year.

But then the PSG-1 might be tied with the AR-10 as well. Both are capable of 1/2 MOA out of the box. My PSS does better than 1/2 MOA. There is a reason military snipers don't use the PSG-1. Spec ops might be another story however.

8. What's the difference?

Don't they both have to be capable of accurately hitting a target at several hundred yards if need be? Almost any rifle could properly be configured for a sniper role. I have several AR-15's that are configured to hit targets at 500 to 600 yards. Maybe even farther although that would be pushing the realm of my skills. Hey, another note does this make me a potential danger to society because I can shoot well and know how to operate a military "style" weapon?

Bolt action and a scope are the cosmetic features of a "sniper" rifle. Of course these rules are void in the John Lee Malvo case.

Remington 700

Its a hunting gun that doubles as a sniper rifle for short range swat. The 700PSS or something like that, is the police version swat gun...i think.

14. It *used* to be the PSS

before Remington had an attack of PC and changed the name. Police Sniper Special (PSS) was getting their flagship under the wrong scrutiny. Nevermind the fact that the Varmint Special (VS) is the exact same gun aside from a different stock (lighter with a narrower fore end and no palm swell).

Police use them because they are:

1. accurate
2. set up from the factory with dual forward swivles for sling and bipod.
3. wide fore grip promotes stability
4. heavy barrel allows for less variation between cold and warm shots as well as "stringing" from rapid fire.

Clearly the Remington PSS and the Winchester Stealth (a PSS clone) are the frontrunners for a sniper rifle, but they aren't a military grade rifle out of the box. To turn a PSS into an M21 you are looking at a H-S Precision stock, for a Leupold M1 tactical, a match barrel with 0 taper, trigger work, bolt face and locking lug polishing, an action rebed, sling, bipod and metal refinishing. That is a real sniper rifle.

So take this $700 rifle, add about $3-4K more in parts and work and you would have a real sniper weapon system.

Otherwise drop your favorite scope on top and go to the range. Like most other rifles, the PSS is more accurate than 90% of the people shooting them. Work on being one of the 10%!

I would much rather have a custom built rifle on a Dakota or Hall Action with a Lija Barrel..chambered in 6.5-284, with a US Optics Scope on it.
