I don't like the J/PS procedure of placing all firearms news articles

in a single thread. I understand the desire to place all reports of specific incidents involving firearms but, some if not most gun news articles have one or more aspects that are unique and deserve separate threads. Otherwise, we may as well have just have one daily thread in the J/PS forum. :shrug:

That's why I started the "Guns In The News" concept. I think it's working pretty well.

along the lines that those numerous threads were being dumped on this board in order to paint a bleak picture of guns. A poster scours the internet, finds a little nugget (or a dozen) of a story, posts it with this commentary: "Another home/family/city made safe by guns" and then jets.

We all know that there are many criminal and negligent uses of guns that occur every day. Got it. Check. Now, just pick one or 2 stories that stand out, and let's discuss them.

Let's shift from quantity to quality.

First the RKBA crowd didn't want lots of threads about people getting shot.....now they don't want one thread about people getting shot...earlier they wanted a thread about guns not shooting people...

I am beginning to sense a theme here...

5. My point was that "specific incidents involving firearms" are different

from reports or articles that deal with general issues. I prefer to discuss general issues in separate threads.

The point was that the story that jody posted in a new thread had already been posted in this forum that same day -- with the exact same headline as its title.

Nothing to do with how many threads, what they're about, blah blah.

Just a case of someone not bothering to read what was on the board before posting, and now complaining that some rule is stifling his/her preferred mode of expression.

Does jody have CO Liberal on ignore, maybe, so his threads don't appear in the main forum list? Or does jody just not bother to read anything that anybody else posts even if they're not on ignore? And whose fault would either of those things be? And why should either of them result in an exemption from the no-duplicates rule?

Is this a personal attack? Who decided to kick up a fuss about his/her own posting error? Who started this thread? Not I.

Somebody got there first and posted a story before jody did, and so it wasn't discussed the way jody "would prefer" to discuss it. Hard cheese.

Hmm. And jody's thread-initiating post "We are overrun by gun crime, says police chief" in Nottinghamshire, UK falls outside that description ... how? Oh yeah. There wasn't any comment in it at all. And of course jody had no intention of discussing it, since jody has anybody who is likely to say anything that jody doesn't like on ignore.

Me, I'm a lot more concerned about this practice, when it comes to the form and substance of discussion on the board, than about whether jody gets to duplicate things that have already been posted.

but I lie awake at nights worrying about whether discourse in this forum is proceeding according to Jody's preferences or not. (snicker)

And, keep in mind, it was only a suggestion. Personally, I think it's working well, too.

However, if you guys prefer, you can post on individual stories. The drawback is that it can clog up the front page pretty quickly, forcing other threads off the screen.

Again, it's up to you.
