GUNS IN THE NEWS--October 22, 2003
As CO Liberal says:
Please try to adhere to the following guidelines:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted to the 'Net within the past 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories are welcome in this thread, as well as gun-related editorials.
3 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
4 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
5 - Comment on a story by replying to that story.

1. Two Dead, One Injured In Northview Heights Shooting
"Two people have been killed and another person wounded in a shooting last night on Hazlett Street in Northview Heights Estates.
Pittsburgh police Commander Maurita Bryant told Channel 4 Action News this morning that, "It's still too early to tell just what we have here. We know that we have two people dead, one female in her 30s, one male in his 30s, and one male is injured. We don't know if this is a domestic situation. We don't know if this was a robbery. We don't know what we have yet." "

"The shooting marks the second time in recent weeks that a homeowner has killed an alleged burglar."

Two justified killings in recent weeks in a relatively small town...I guess DGUs really DO happen.....

5. What Are The Odds......
....that burglers would target the same home twice in two weeks when the owner was home, and both times they were shot and killed??

Perhaps we have someone who's a little trigger-happy?? This story should be watched for further developments.

the houses were NOT the same, different locations, different burglars, and different shooters. One involved a 53 year old man named Tommy Christian shooting a 31 year old man named Christopher Stiff, the other shooting involved a 31 year old man named Sinartha Bradfield shooting a 31 year old man named Anthony Mayers. One happened in North Jackson, one in Northwest Jackson.

I guess being 31 is dangerous there... ;-)

8. Fingerprint on stolen map said to link defendant, sniper scene
"VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - On the night that a sniper fired from the shadows and fatally shot Dean H. Meyers at a Manassas gas station, police found nearby a map of Baltimore that had been stolen from the Enoch Pratt Free Library and bore fingerprints of the men accused in the killing.
The jury heard gripping testimony yesterday from several witnesses, including the man who authorities believe was the snipers' first victim in Maryland.
Paul J. LaRuffa was closing his Italian restaurant in Clinton Sept. 5, 2002, when he was attacked as he got into his car.
"I shut the door and almost immediately I saw a figure to my left," LaRuffa said, weeping. "I saw a flash of light, my window broke, I heard shots, I was being shot. I leaned to my right, waiting for the shots to stop. It seemed like forever, but it was only several seconds." "

9. Bond set for suspect in gun case
"A U.S. magistrate set a $100,000 property bond Tuesday for a Commerce man who was arrested last week on charges of dealing firearms without a license.
Agents from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms raided Timms' residence last Wednesday, seizing 147 firearms and 60,000 rounds of ammunition, including submachine guns, a 20mm anti-tank rifle, a 12-gauge ''street sweeper'' shotgun and a 3.5-inch rocket-launcher.
The ATF had been following Timms for more than two years since guns purchased by him began appearing in crime scenes throughout six states, the ATF's Michael Delvecchio said after Timms was arrested Thursday.
Timms had been selling large quantities of the weapons at flea markets and gun shows within Georgia, Delvecchio said.
Delvecchio noted that the ATF considers Georgia a major supplier of illegal firearms to other states. Many Northeasterners come to the state to purchase firearms because of Georgia's relatively lax gun laws, he said."

12. Militiaman denies plot to use guns
"GRAND RAPIDS -- A militiaman accused of plotting to kill police in retaliation for the fatal shooting of another man with anti-government views has pleaded not guilty to federal weapons charges.
A grand jury charged Somerville with three felonies: illegal possession of a machine gun, being a marijuana user in unlawful possession of firearms and manufacturing marijuana.
According to court documents, a source told investigators that Somerville was attempting to mount a machine gun onto a Jeep and that he wanted to cause an auto accident, then ambush and kill police when they responded.
Scott Woodring, 40, a one-time militia member, killed a state trooper July 7 during a standoff at Woodring's home in Newaygo County, where officers were trying to serve a warrant charging him with soliciting sex from a minor. Police apparently shot him dead six days later. "

13. Apartment shots fired out of fear
"The man officials said endangered police officers and neighbors by firing a shotgun 17 times through his window Monday night feared people outside were after him, a police spokeswoman said Tuesday.
Robert J. Mahn, 49, was arrested on two counts of aggravated assault and four counts of endangerment in the incident, which also forced police to evacuate 15 apartments and shut down a major roadway for an hour and a half, said Sgt. Judy Altieri, a spokeswoman for the Tucson Police Department.
The case began at 8 p.m., when officers received several reports of shots fired from the apartment, Altieri said. Officers began evacuating the nearby units and tried to make contact with Mahn. He continued firing sporadically out his window throughout contact attempts."

14. another desperate attempt
to scare people into thinking guns are eeeevil and cause crime. Out of over 275,000,000 firearms in the U.S. at most 30 will be highlighted in this thread today.
How many newspaper articles do you see where someone was able to succesfully avoid a collision while driving a car?
As another illustration, most car accidents are not reported in the Newspaper. Generally only the most horrific/deadly accidents are reported in the Newspaper. Just because they are not reported does not mean that car accidents do not occur. The same is true for crimes avoided through the lawful use of firearms.

27. I wasn't comparing cars to guns.
Those that support the RKBA are often challenged to show "proof" that firearms are used to prevent crime by linking to a Newspaper article. However I was using car accidents as an example of selective reporting decisions Newspaper editors make. The fact that a particular incident was not reported in the newspaper does not mean that it didn't occur.

"A Sacramento family gripped in tragedy is trying to cope with the shooting death of their youngest son.
On Sunday, 8-year-old Darren Saechao was killed when he and his cousin were playing with a loaded shotgun and the weapon discharged. Police said the gun belonged to a 15-year-old cousin who is now in custody.
And this is not the first time the family has been hit with tragedy. Two years ago, the Darren's older sister -- Nai Saechao -- was killed while she was with a group of children who were playing with a gun. She died at the age of 12."

Female Student Takes Gun and Bullets to School

Metro Police arrested a 14-year-old ninth grader Wednesday morning at Hunters Lane High School.

Another student first told a school staff member that the girl had a gun.

School staff searched the 14-year-old's gym locker and found a .357 Magnum revolver in the student's purse.

The gun was not loaded but five bullets were in her purse.

The student, who was not identified, told police the gun belongs to her family, police said. She also told them she took the gun to school for protection.

"WASHINGTON - Senate Democrats plan to urge Congress to reauthorize a law banning plastic guns that could be used by terrorists to slip past airport metal detectors.
Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., said Tuesday he plans to introduce legislation to reauthorize the Terrorist Firearm Detection Act of 1988, which bans the creation or possession plastic firearms. Exemptions for the military and intelligence agencies are provided in the law.
"I agree that the issue of weapons being undetected is an important one," Assistant Attorney General Christopher Wray said. "I would be happy to review the legislation."
Kennedy and fellow Democratic Sens. Charles Schumer of New York and Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey planned to introduce the legislation on Wednesday. "
