Help for the hoplophobe.
Edited on Thu Oct-23-03 11:50 AM by juancarlos
I thought that some people here could use this service.

http://www.changethatsrightnow.com/problem_detail.asp?PhobiaID=1603&SDID=212

It has been pointed out that when you overload the circuits on your computer, the screen goes blank. Likewise, when you confront a hoplophobe with reasoned argument, his mind goes blank. We have so little contact with those other people that it is sometimes hard for us to understand that they exist, but they do. Reasoned argument is entirely on our side, but sometimes it is hard to find anyone to reason with. That blank screen is hardly an interesting antagonist.

I guess he means people who don't hang out where hate literature is passed out...or armed loonies dress like Nazis.

3. We are those who have no fear of firearms.
Edited on Thu Oct-23-03 12:16 PM by juancarlos
I assume that you are referenceing Lenny Bruce's performance for which he was indicted in 1964.

I take the time to inform you that I am a 26 year old Hispanic man. Your vitriol notwithstanding, it continues to be the case. If you are offended because you see the signs of hoplophobia in yourself, I apologize.

Hmm. I guess I'd have to say I'm offended by incoherency, in this case.

And by people commenting pointlessly and rudely on things they know nothing about, which I can only assume to be the case for you vis-à-vis the Lenny Bruce tale in question and thus for your inference concerning my meaning.

As I did say: if you don't know the story, ask and it shall be told.

And until you know what you're talking about, my advice would be to refrain from grand jetéing into that abyss of incorrect assumptions.

Now, reason away.

I would advise posting links instead. After googling your suggested terms, I found a 1964 case in which L.B. was indicted for a performance in which he simulated sodomization of T.

That website was pretty hokey. All the "phobias" were described in the exact same terms, just with switching the named phobia for each description.

Not sure what this thread is supposed to be about.

6. Most phobias would be described similarly
As phobias are irrational fears. They can pretty much use the same descriptions, just change the object feared. I have an irrational fear of snakes, others have irrational fear of guns, or spiders, or cars, or any number of things. There are people on this list whom I suspect of having mild cases of hoplophobia, just as I have a mild phobia of snakes.

9. you have a mild phobia of snakes
and I don't. I do have a mild phobia of heights.

And perhaps of crowds, but that one might rather be described as a preference not to waste my time surrounded by people who are of no interest to me and are quite likely to irritate me.

Not that I want them to die, necessarily, or have any apprehensions about their intentions toward me; the world would just be nicer without most of them.

Hey. I wonder what else that last bit might describe my feelings about? Three guesses, and the first two ...

Now, if you would just identify two of those "people on this list whom <you> suspect of having mild cases of hoplophobia", we might be getting somewhere. Or, if you're feeling discreet, just identify what they have said that has led to this "suspicion" of yours.

I mean, you wouldn't want to be suspected of paranoia, would you?? That is, after all, the diagnosis often applied to people who have strange suspicions unsupported by any experience or facts.

10. I won't do that.
I will not identify, by name or by writings, those whom I think might have a mild case. A posting such as that could be considered a personal attack under the board rules. Thanks for playing.

14. then how about
... you refrain from making claims about other posters that you are not prepared to back up with facts?

This entire thread is nothing but a great big ad personam argument -- an effort to portray your adversaries as irrational and psychologically disordered.

You claimed that the thread was intended to be "silly", but the content of your own posts -- unsubstantiated allegations about other posters -- is not "silly", it is incivil. That is, it is not honest, sincere commentary; it is demagoguery, it is an effort to persuade others to side with you against your adversaries not by that vaunted reason of yours, but by an appeal to your potential allies' irrational responses to words.

At least when I have called other posters liars, I proved my case.

First, I could not specify the individuals, as that would be against the rules. If you feel that was directed to you, I can say that it wasn't. As far as the ad personam part, I'll freely state that only a small portion of anti-gunners are true hoplophobes. Next, I never claimed that my reason was "vaunted", I implied that those people who have the mental problem of hoplophobia cannot respond to a reasoned arguement. Thanks for playing.

"Dressy" flip-flops, and the women who think they're "swank."
 (of course, those are two things that bother me)

"It would be like someone supporting the Nazi agenda but then denying that they are a Nazi."
Gee, but since those dimwits who are actually calling themselves Nazis are all trumpeting this "gun rights" agenda....
