1. So far more than 25,000 have signed up
in just under three weeks....

Until the NRA came along, no one realized that Hallmark Cards was plotting with Vinny Testaverde, the American Academy of Pediatricians, and Hadasssah to take guns away from feeble-minded right wingers....

I have MrBenchley on ignore because he made an inappropriate wise-crack about the death of my father, but I'm sure he is capable of handling the question himself.

Nobody on DU has ever made such a suggestion. Not even people who have been tombstoned.

People put him on ignor because it is the only way they can blot out the truth.

I put him on Ignore because he wrote something very cruel and personal about the death of my father, not at all related to the subject matter of the discussion at hand.

I'll debate any appropriate subject with anyone as long as they treat me with courtesy and respect, as required by the posting rules. If I want to get called names and subjected to personal attacks I can always go to Usenet.

51. it's self-portraits now is it?

"Jerk is sarcastic, mean, unforgiving and never misses an opportunity to make a cutting
remark. Jerk's repulsive personality quickly alienates other Warriors, and after some initial
skirmishing he is usually ostracized. Still, Jerk is very happy to participate in electronic
forums because in cyberspace he is free to be himself...without the risk of getting a
real-time punch in the mouth."

If you want that pic for your sig line, I won't fight you for it.

And just so's nobody claims to have beat me to it:

"Profundus Maximus eagerly holds forth on all subjects, but his thin knowledge will not support a sustained assault and therefore his attacks quickly peter out. Profundus Maximus often uses big words, obscure terms and...ahem...even Latin to bluff his way through battle."

"Thin knowledge"??? Well, I'm also a "clean-freak" virgo who hasn't washed the kitchen floor in 2 years ... or is it 4 ... . Never did hold with astrology.

Maybe I'd rather be ...

"Philosopher differs from Profundus Maximus in that he actually does know something. While somewhat humorless and slightly aloof, he is also slow to anger. When he does deign to engage in battle he is considerate of other opinions, but his ponderous and lengthy cogitations effectively smother the opposition."

... but that just doesn't look like much fun. Although jody might put up some stiff competition for the Profundus crown.

I think we've hit the jackpot on this fella hereabouts ... his mama must've taken many fertility drugs, since there generally seem to be octoplets of him:

"Stone Deaf is one of the few truly invincible Warriors because nothing can shatter his impenetrable armor of non recognition. His primitive battle strategy is maddening effective; he simply refuses to acknowledge any arguments he doesn't like. Kung-Fu Master can hammer away with devastating blows, Cyber Sisters can screech in full throat and Profundus Maximus can expound until he drops, but Stone Deaf remains utterly oblivious as he advances his dogged and often repetitious attacks. In the early stages of battle a wide array of Warriors will fling themselves at Stone Deaf, but inevitably they fall back exahusted or lose interest when they see that their best weapons have no effect. His only real enemy is Admin, who has the power to eject him from the discussion forum."

Oh jo-o-o-deee ... c'mon girl ...

.

54. Missed me by a mile
Although I have only ever used this one ID on DU this one fits me much better:

"Impostor is a digital Proteus who changes his persona whenever it suits his purposes. That 21 year old co-ed from Arizona State you met in a discussion forum may, in fact, be a retired steel worker from Pittsburgh. Impostor will claim to be black, white, rich, poor, young, old, straight or gay, and if he's good he can pull it off - at least for a while. Of course, there are sinister, even criminal reasons Impostor would lie about who he is, but more often he fakes it to lend weight to his arguments, or simply to amuse himself. Impostor's requisite imagination and good writing skills can make him a formidable enemy, but even the best of this Warrior class will eventually blunder and reveal their true identity. Once uncovered, Impostor will always flee, but he may return in another form - you just never know..."

So watch your six...

48. "...the NRA is too wussy!"
I've said it on here before: I think the NRA is sometimes too quick to compromise. I think they need to be more aggressive in their education, publicity, and lobbying efforts. But they are a mainstream organization, so they are limited in their ability to take hardline positions.

That's why I also support groups like the Gun Owners of America and the Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership, and work with the Ohioans for Concealed Carry.

23. Oh too funny, happens to be wrong, and that song was great
Outrage 1: True the NRA wants back military "styled" weapons, I have never seen a semi-auto fired 12 times in 2 seconds and all of them hit the target... hell I have never seen a semi auto fire 12 times in 2 seconds.
Right now 10 round semi-autos are out right now. Those 2 extra bullets before a reload are the most lethal.

Outrage 2: The bill prevents worthless lawsuits, not ones that acually have merit. It raises the burdon of proof so that flimsy lawsuits will not be permitted, but actual, real cases go through. Including Government prosicutions.
Also even the BATFE said that gun lookup's do not mean there has been a crime. "Sold 52 guns to criminals" really means, the BATFE was requested to provide current status of the guns legality. Be it during a traffic stop, search of the home, or any number of perfectly legal activities, NOT because all of them were used in a crime.

I also love that they link to Brady and Million Moms and not to VPA. Could it be they dont want to let people know that even an anti-gun group thinks the AWB is worthless?

I would post more but I grow tired of proving you wrong. Distort as you will, or say surrrrre or what a pantload.

Reposted from slackmaster's post

The Violence Policy Center says the ban hasn't made any difference in the kinds of weapons available:

"Immediately after the 1994 law was enacted, the gun industry moved quickly to make slight, cosmetic design changes in their "post-ban" guns to evade the law. Today, gunmakers openly boast of their ability to circumvent the assault weapons ban."

(See http://www.vpc.org/press/0305officer.htm )

While their buddies at the Brady Center say:

"If the NRA gets its way, police officers on your streets will soon be outgunned by fast, efficient, people-killing machines like AK-47s and Uzis that have been banned for a decade.:

(See http://www.bradycampaign.org )

What's wrong with this picture? The positions espoused by the Bradys and the VPC cannot both be true.

Why are the gun control zealots spending MILLIONS of dollars trying to get the ban renewed on one hand, while on the other hand saying it hasn't accomplished anything?

40. So the VPC was the VPA
What a post! Gee, I wonder what the VPC's position on assault weapons is?

"The 1994 Assault Weapons Ban will expire in September 2004 unless Congress and the President act and pass new legislation. Since the law's inception, the gun industry has worked to exploit its limitations, making "sporterized" versions of banned weapons. Tell President Bush to not only renew, but strengthen, the Assault Weapons Ban so that it truly bans all assault weapons. "

They all seem to be nice people, polite and willing to listen to alternative viewpoints. But as a group they are desperately ignorant about guns and gun laws. I have yet to meet one who could give a definition of "assault weapon" in her (or his) own words that had any resemblence to one of the actual legal definitions of the term.

They've ADMITTED to my face that they don't really know what is and what is not an assault weapon, but they insist they want to ban them anyway because their leaders told them they should want to ban them.

I respect people unless they give me a reason not to, but I have a lot less respect for people who do as they are told without bothering to question their marching orders.

36. Who the hell are you trying to kid, rom?
This is the scum of the earth bitching about decent people like the American Psychological Association, the Children's Defense Fund, the League of Women Voters and the National PTA because they're decent people and not lunatics.

52. I posted this in another thread.
Unfortunately the website is pretty typical of the Brady Campaign/MMM. The two "outrages" listed are both, at the mininum, very misleading statements. I don't really see the big deal about a "blacklist", either; does anybody here support corporations or individuals that give support to causes you're against? I try not to.

The website is also a pretty typical attempt by MMM and the BC to make it appear as tho some new grassroots pro-control group has come to be. The website is "Sponsored by StoptheNRA.com", which in fact is nothing more than a BC/MMM shill.

People talk about the NRA being funded by the gun companies, but it seems to me that there are 3.6 million members who pay $35 a year to belong. In addition, there are far more grass roots pro-gun orgs than pro-control. If gun control is a winning, popular cause, why does the NRA have such broad based financial support while the pro-control folks have to depend mainly on grants from foundations and are unable to sustain organizations other than VPC and BC/MMM?

55. Don't forget, leanings,
that the VPC itself is only a child organization of the brady bunch - Supposedly, it's their public policy research arm, or some such.
