Santa brought me an AR-15

I now have an LWRC M6 flat top. As soon as I can afford some optics, I will get a holo dot sight. The fun of a 15 flat is seeing how many toys you can hang on it.

This is the proverbial "assualt-weapon". It is perfectly legal. It is no more dangerous than my 12 ga. Mossberg or my Sig 226 .40.

I also have a cross-bow and fishing rods.

See, I enjoy guns and outdoors and bows and life. Others may dissagree and like other things. But there are many who want to label me as a criminal or killer.

A 12 ga slug will do a lot more penetration damage than a sporting grade 5.56 round.

Which is of course not to say that 5.56 isn't a significant risk for overpenetration. It is, and anyone who says otherwise is buying into a myth. But it's slightly less dangerous than 12 ga.

58. Two ways..

You can have a truly fixed magazine- you have to remove the rear takedown pin and flip up to reload, or you can have a magazine that isn't removable without a tool- just so happens that the 'tool' can be a bullet. Called the 'bullet button'.

Dumb legislation drafted by people who know little about guns + legal clarification from state law enforcement agency = hijinks for gun nuts.

Now you can build up any "banned" rifle you want in California, as long as it's not listed by name, simply by installing a shroud of some kind around the magazine release, so the magazine cannot be detached with a finger unaided. Another poster linked to the AR bullet button, and the same principle can be applied to AK-47s, Saiga-12s, Drugonovs, etc.

ARs with bullet buttons are now being used in Three Gun competitions in California in which the participants are wearing rings with studs on them they can use to drop the "fixed" magazines.

Isn't gun control fun? As long as stupid people write the legislation, we'll continue to find ways to get around it.

The LWRC the OP bought is not on the list, and many Californians have in recent years built rifles on LWRC lowers.

The California Assault Weapon Ban is pretty toothless these days, thanks to a combination of poorly-drafted legislation; a couple of legal smackdowns in California courts; a lazy and ideological Department of Justice (recently overhauled and vastly improved under new Attorney General Jerry Brown*); and aggressive activism on the part of California gun enthusiasts. In the last three years or so, tens of thousands of otherwise banned "assault weapons" have been flooding into the state to be built up into perfectly legal configurations, like this one:



Here's a link to an LWRC rifle that was sold in California last month.

The California Assault Weapon Ban (actually two separate laws) is an excellent example of why people who don't know anything about guns should avoid writing legislation attempting to restrict them.


* Jerry Brown's approach to gun control legislation has been so refreshingly reasonable and common-sense that I know a number of Republican California gun nuts who will be giving him their vote if he decides to run for Governor again (especially since the Republicans are likely to nominate another gun-grabber). Perhaps being mayor of Oakland gave him a good perspective on what kind of law enforcement works and what doesn't.

of 55 grs. Federal. The twist is 1/9.

I put a Bushbnell on the top and sighted it in at 100 ft. (Indoord range). I am not a marksman but once I got it dialed in, it was silly. All I could do is drill a quarter size hole in the middle of the target. That is the gun control I love.

I went to the range over Christmas. I bought 2 50-round boxes of .44 mag, 3 100-round boxes of 9mm, and 2 50-round boxes of .45. I think it cost about $180. It's insane. I have a Lee reloader I've never taken out of the box. I need to check and see if it is cheaper to reload these days. I've all but quit shooting my .45 because the 9mm is half-price. A 250-round box of .45 is $81 at Walmart.

It's getting ridiculous when 3 trips to the shooting range costs as much for ammo as buying a gun. It won't be long and all I'll be able to afford to shoot is .22LR.

19. If you practice a lot

it is a lot less expensive. My family (4 competition shooters in 3 sports)will go through 400-500rounds a month. And that is just at the matches!!! Add practice and it adds up to 1000-1200 rounds per month!!
Just remember to get a good manual and follow the recipes inside. Since you have a basic setup the supplies to load 200rds of center fire pistol with jacketed ammo is about $65. $45-50 if you use cast and lubed lead bullets.
It is also a fun part of the hobby, very relaxing.

Since all of my shooting is punching holes in paper, lead bullets are fine with me. I'm guessing this leads to increased lead fouling of the barrel? Do you have to clean in any special way after shooting cast lead?

a hard cast bullet and keep your velocities below 1200fps, or if you want more speed use a bullet with a gas check. No special cleaning needs to be done. All of your supplies can be bought on the net.

but at the shows and online, I can find it at .43/round. Right now, I have only fired about 300 rounds but if I decide to get real deep into 223/556, I might look into reloading.

I was pretty young when 9/11 happened. It is the seminal event that triggered my interest in self-defence. I decided that I could not wait for America to defend me under any and all situations.

Out of the eight or ten guys I talked to at work last night, all but one of them got an AR for Christmas. One guy has eight now. Another one got a couple of cases of ammo from Santa.

My boys were given a couple of toy AR's by a relative. I don't care for toy guns but I caved this time. In a couple of years when it comes time for them to learn to shoot, the toy guns will hit the trash never to be seen again.

Those that are pushing for an "assault weapons ban" are either idiots or dishonest. There is no other explanation other than it is the easiest gun ban to pass. Over 85% of all gun homicides are committed by people using handguns. Why aren't they trying to ban handguns??????????

For the feds to prove in court (not using PR and doublespeak) that "assault weapons" are not "in common usage" and "used by law abiding citizens" will be difficult if not impossible.

My father drilled with these when he was in high school in the late forties. He used to take one home on Friday nights when his ROTC squad was going to march in away football games. It was the standard United States infantry rifle then.

55. Nice rifle. I have the walnut stock version. I like it better then the newer socum version.

I traded up to mine - started with a new but faulty Marlin .41 lever action, swapped in towards a used M1S90 - traded that towards an AR-10, then turned that around for the M1A Scout. I think it was priced at $1400 a few years ago.

I did add another AR-10 and an AR-15, so I went with both in the long run!

Seriously. I shot expert in the Marine corps using iron sights of course. Twenty five years later I would not be able to achieve that without the aid of a good scope.

Don't get my statement wrong about never owning an AR or AK type rifle. There isn't anything wrong with them at all, the fact is that I only have a limited supply of cash. I had to ask myself which rifle would be the most useful for my area. If I had an unlimited supply of money I would own a few Ar's for sure.
