Police: Man Invades New Britain Home, Shoots Woman, Abducts Another

New Britain police said Welsh, who was battling cancer, was found shot dead in a gravel pit on Waterbur Road in Bristol, almost 10 miles away from where she was visiting a friend in New Britain.
Welsh was missing after a man invaded the home on Woodhaven Drive and shot the homeowner -- identified by police on Monday as Carol Larese, 65 -- just before 10 a.m. on Sunday, police said. Police said the man then abducted Welsh, 62, of New Britain, forcing her into her own sport utility vehicle. The circumstances from that time to a chase and crash in Watertown remain unclear.
According to a warrant for Williams' arrest, he told police that he was sleeping in an unlocked car Sunday morning when he saw MaryEllen Welsh walk into Carol Larese's house to have coffee and followed her inside.
"He told police he had made many mistakes such as allowing the females time to memorize his face," according to the warrant. "That is when Williams realized he would have to kill both females."
Larese remained hospitalized at Hartford Hospital, last listed in serious condition and she is expected to survive.

Just plain evil, very black and white to me. No gray that I can see.

1. When he did that
somebody should have been able to give him two in the chest and one in the head. At the time of the crime, very black and white indeed. He needed stopping, and there wasn't anyone around able to do it.

Call me a bleeding heart liberal, (probably because I am), but I have to wonder what happened between this point in time:

(Generic baby picture to make a point of course)

and this one:

There are no evil babies.

2. How Likely Is It
Edited on Fri Jan-09-09 01:02 AM by AndyTiedye
that one of those elderly, sick, women would have been able to outgun this guy?

3. If attacked by a man armed with a gun, I'd like my chances better if I was armed with one.

4. His Gun is Pointed At You. Yours is in Your Pocket. How Does That Work Exactly?
And in this case, his reflexes are probably 3x faster than yours to boot.

5. Action beats reaction.
However, not all opportunities for action are good ones. some are more advantageous than others. If you choose wisely you can win or at least cut your losses.

6. What sort of action could possibly help in this sort of situation?
Even accepting the highly unlikely premise that someone goes around their own home with a gun in their pocket and their hand on the trigger, all the time.

7. I hate SHTF scenario playing
but this argument that you are advancing (and others regularly advance) is wrought with fallacy. It requires the victim call out the killer and draw against him wild west style, too much teevee leads to this kind of speculation. The idea of concealed carry and the reason it is effective is the element of surprise. In this case, the murder was an after thought. The murderer's motive was robbery, burglary and/or sexual assault. During the time between his invasion and the murder of the victim do you think this tower of intellect never turned his back? Do you think he never looked away or went into another room in the house? The scenario you are advancing requires the killer to invade and immediately start shooting, a scenario which rarely happens. If the home owner had access to a concealed weapon either on her person or in proximity to her she could likely found a window of opportunity to effectively turn the tables. Now the victim may not always win, but the element of surprise is a very strong defensive tool which results in far more win scenarios than you are considering.

16. Call 911?
Some people are more comfortable with law enforcement officers handling situations like this. They handle everything like crime scene tape around your body, calling the coroner, notifying your relatives and scratching their heads trying to figure out who did it.

I prefer a couple of good dogs that bark at strangers & easy access to a loaded firearm. (preferably a 12 gauge shotgun)

8. I prefer to be armed when confronted by armed attackers, you do what you want.

10. Here is how it works

Mr. Charles Johnson, aged 91, shot at and chased away two burglars, including one who had a gun to his wife's head.

18. That Doesn't Say How, Only That it Happened
The implication is that he didn't much care if they shot his wife,
since they could easily have done so.

That's just idiotic.

9. Point it and pull the trigger.
At that point in time, under those circumstances, force had to be met with force. Other opportunities to avoid the conflict had already passed.

12. We know how it worked out unarmed.
So getting killed without putting up a fight is preferable to TRYING? I do not understand that theory at all.

13. You are laboring under the assumption
that the theory is sane. Lose that constraint, and I think everything will fall into place.

14. My wife is 61, and easily qualified for her CCW permit.
In fact she is a better shot than I am and I have used handguns for about 50 years now.

She qualified last time with a S&W .357 (two inch barrel) and a three inch group.

Hope that it never happens, but, I pity the poor bastard who kicks in our door!

better fine motor control than men. Fifty thousand years of tending babies, picking nuts and berries, and weaving baskets and clothing had an impact. All us guys are good for is throwing rocks at mastodons. :)

15. Too bad one or both of those victims
weren't armed. Then, they might still be alive and the criminal would have had one more problem: lack of a pulse.
