2. Some day
Some day someone is going to do this in the United States with a gun, and that will be the end of firearm rights in this country.

4. Never heard of Patrick Purdy?
He killed 5, and wounded 29, elementary school children in 1989, and we didn't repeal the Second Amendment.

5. Nope.

Nope, but it looks like this guy may well have been a catalyst for the California and federal Assault Weapon laws.

6. Purdy was a convenient excuse, yes....
Edited on Fri Jan-23-09 04:38 PM by benEzra
although the Violence Policy Center's Josh Sugarmann actually hatched the "assault weapon" bait-and-switch in 1988, a year before the Purdy shootings.

Never mind the fact that the worst mass shootings in the USA have involved ordinary pistols, not modern-looking rifles, or that Gang Lu killed the same number of people (5) using a .38 revolver not long after the Purdy shootings, or that rifles with handgrips that stick out are no more lethal than rifles with straight stocks and don't fire any faster. The "AK menace" was an effective meme, and the gun-ban lobby ran with it.

The result, of course, was to multiply sales of modern-looking rifles fivefold or tenfold, eventually making them the most popular rifles in America; another consequence was the loss of the House and Senate in 1994. And considering that the Federal AWB didn't even ban any guns, and didn't affect rifle magazine capacities---care to speculate on how an actual ban on the most popular rifles in America (a la H.R.1022 et seq) would go over?

8. Y'know, it's really
easy to buy just about any sword you want. And I'm talking about live blades too, none of that decorative pot metal crap.
