Several RW sites are whining about a "Gun Control" measure
in the stimulus bill, which they call a "Bolshivek" inspired fraud tha was "rammed down the throats of the American people".
Anyone have any information on what they are talking about? I can't stand th even read much of their insame swill anymore, I can find little rational information elsewhere.

FWIW, people like these RW'ers are one big reason I own guns.

1. Probably more fabrications of what's really in it
They said they haven't had time to read it, but they say what's in it.

7. I've lost all tolerance for these people
I'm a hunter and when I get the NRA song and dance,I just tell them how stupid and gullible they are and how they're being used. It's never pretty , but I'm tired of hearing the propaganda.

11. I agree they have been brain washed......
I get sick of that Obama going to take your guns crap. Ask them if they know how long it takes to change the Constitution or to add an amendment? Most of these freep type are clueless.

The 27th amendment only took 74,003 days before the States finally ratified it. There are many amendments that just died on the vine because they never were ratified.

21. Best way to take away the "take your guns crap:"
(1) Remove the call for a permanent assault weapons "ban" from the Democratic Party's Platform;
(2) Obama's cessation of calling for yet another assault weapon "ban."

Until that time, sales of "assault weapons" (semi-auto carbines) will continue at a rate out of proportion to the recession, and the NRA, RWs, radio shout-show artists, etc. will continue to hammer the Democrats with relative impunity.

14. Wow, just try to put armed people in "reeducation camps"...
The result would be very bloody. (Assuming that the Supreme Court would ever agree with such a plan.)

Perhaps you would be willing to volunteer for the new SS that would be assigned the job of rounding up gun owners for the camps. It would be a very exciting job with a short life expectancy.

Also, God forbid that any Freepers read your comment. You idea is as ridiculous as many of theirs.

Everybody has to have one. Men, women & children. There are no exceptions. Everyone must face "the hanger" at least once in their lives.

12. HR 45 "Holt"
They're trying to establish linkage between this bit of political fail with the stimulus. I have a buddy who's a certifiable member of the Tin Foil Society who is constantly harping about it. I always ask him how many co-sponsors it has yet. Hint, the answer is none.

Unless "Holt" somehow got slid into the stimulus bill in it's entirety it's going nowhere.

Oh, and if you're really into the wearing of the Reynolds, check out the state of political stability in Mexico these days. They're all in a tizzy waiting on the collapse of the Mexican State and an influx of refugees from the inevitable blood bath. I say if a man wants to walk a couple thousand miles with his kids in his arms looking for a better life I'll call him "Brother" any day.

13. If HR 45 did get hidden in the stimulus bill...
Edited on Sat Feb-14-09 04:11 PM by spin
there will be hell to pay at the midterm election.

And if it did it will be hard to Democrats to explain why it should be part of a stimulus bill.

Lets hope the reports are false. I have only been able to find rumors from the right wing on the net.

16. Could be something to the fears
Edited on Sat Feb-14-09 09:41 PM by Will E Orwontee
From what I've read it has to do with the national medical records database and the governmental "healthcare advisor" directed care language in the Stimulus Bill (Act?). That, combined with the earlier passed "reforms" in the NICS system and the expansion of the prohibited from ownership list of veterans who have sought some sort of mental health treatment (but not had the official determination) could lead to major mischief in the purchase / ownership rights of many Americans. The push linking guns to being considered a health issue has been long and unrelenting and if everything goes into this database including any mental health history we could be in for some scary stuff indeed.

17. We do need to find a way to prevent people with severe mental problems...
from legally purchasing firearms.

But we have to be very careful how we define severe mental problems. Of course, we have to make sure that any medical records database is secure and not made available to those who would misuse to it deny credit, insurance or employment.

The "heathcare adviser" concept is indeed scary. Health care to older citizens might be restricted by this new czar. A younger person might receive treatment for a condition. An elderly patient might just be issued a bottle of "blue pills" and be told to go home and get plenty of rest. The government might find this an excellent way to resolve the impending social security crisis.

Welcome to DU.

18. The rules are there already . . .
Edited on Sat Feb-14-09 10:09 PM by Will E Orwontee
The federal prohibitions for purchase / ownership for those with mental problems is there, problem is the patchwork of "point of contact" state regulations restricting mental health determination from being part of the background database check. There must be a way of protecting patient confidentiality AND quickly determining those who meet the criteria for having their right to arms disabled.

I think the fear is that a simple prescription for Prozac will then become the new criteria . . .

would a gun owner with minor mental problems seek help if he/she feared the loss of their firearms?

20. I'm not sure what you're reading about the "healthcare advisor..."
But that post has been around since 2004, and it's all about coordinating the availability of medical records, not actual treatment decisions.

23. Rumors were spreading that the Helthcare advisor...
would actually be making treatment decisions based on age.

No sooner had the McCaughey commentary hit the tape then -- what a coincidence! -- radio bloviator Rush Limbaugh was quoting it on his syndicated show, warning that under the world envisioned by the Obama stimulus bill, old people would be denied all costly medical treatments under a new "duty to die" regime meant to save taxpayer money. The McCaughey commentary also got a prominent mention by uber-blogger Matt Drudge.

The next day, the Wall Street Journal's senior economics writer, Stephen Moore, was on Fox News warning that the stimulus bill would put the government in control of what medical treatments you and your family would be allowed to receive. That set the stage for Megyn Kelly's interview with Sen. Arlen Specter, who was virtually browbeat by the anchor until he promised that "we are not going to let the federal government monitor what doctors do."

The Journal's editorial page picked up the campaign the next day, drawing the line of causation from electronic health records -- another beneficiary of the stimulus bill -- to comparative health records to government price controls and then a government-run "health tech monopoly."

This right-wing brushfire didn't start on its own, of course. It was a work of political arson by the country's drugmakers and medical device makers, which have the most to lose if there is solid research showing that some of their most expensive and high-margin products aren't really better than the low-priced spread. The flames were also fanned by "disease groups" like Easter Seals and the American Cancer Society, which fear that any attempt to determine what works best will inevitably lead to a one-size-fits-all approach to treating people with serious chronic conditions.
