Hunters for the Hungry.
Neat little social service program I found on the Tennessee Wildlife Reserve website.

http://www.conservetn.com/Hunters%20for%20the%20Hungry/huntersforhungry.htm

Me personally. I dont hunt. I went one time with my dad and killed a squirrel and felt guilty for weeks. But this seems like a cool little program to help provide food for the needy.
A lot of meat harvested every year goes to waste. Which I think is a shame. But this seems like a good way to kill two birds with one stone.
For any of you hunting types out there check and see if your state has a program like this one. I think I saw mention of a Texas and Virginia program at least.

And remember to donate canned goods and the like whenever possible :P

1. Great program....
Have not participated in it, myself, but I know of many others who find this program a rewarding one.

3. Great Porgram
I would like to donate someday but with 5 mouths to feed it is difficult. (My teens love wild game)

My state has a program and besides the donation of the deer you will have to add the processing fee and then also find a processer that is involved.

4. Sterilization here in Illinois
I wish our local folsk did things that way. It's a win-win situation.

We had a recent issue with this in one of our suburbs, Highland Park. The local deer herd was ruining lawns and shrubs and starving from overpopulation and the only natural predator was a Buick.

The state was going to hire hunters to thin the herd. Local butchers offerred to process the meat for free and donate it to local homeless shelters.

A local environmental group stopped it with a court order and got a resolution passed to tranquilize the animals and pay for sterilization instead.

Still too many deer, no meat for needy folks and the Buick still hunts free in Highland Park.

You ought to know, since you're the one who wrencched this arround to make it seem like the "horseshit and hysteria" referred to this program and not the dishonest press release in the other thread....

But since we're on the subject, how much better off would the poor hungry folks be if the money spent on hunting went right to a food bank?

And how much does it cost somebody to butcher this meat and inspect it for parasites and disease? And who pays for that part of the program?

11. Good Morning, MrBenchley!!!
But since we're on the subject, how much better off would the poor hungry folks be if the money spent on hunting went right to a food bank?

Well, lets put this into perspective. It cost me ~$20 for my in state hunting license and another $10 for a box of 20 rounds. So that's $30 worth for this season...but wait Bench, there's more. I don't need to buy a box again for a while, provided my scope doesnt go out of alignment, so next year and the year after that I'll pass the savings on to the poor.

Now check this out Bench! After a deer is field dressed, it is still likely to be around 100lbs and likely even higher...it really depends on where you hunt. Since I hunt in low pressure areas with tons of farmland, they tend to be on the larger end. Now all that weight translates into dozens and dozens of pounds of lean all natural great tasting meat...FOR $30! Go to your local supermarket and see what how much you can get for $30...go on Bench, I dare you.

Picture this, I go out with my $30 and bring back dozens of pounds of meat for the poor. Some anti hunter goes out with $30 and can only get about 10 pounds of meat...and you know what Bench, it's the lousy kind, filled with fat, and loaded with antibiotics, steriods and other chemicals because the cheap stuff is from farms where animals are stacked on top of each other. So maybe the anti hunter decides well then, I just won't get meat....so what are they going to get....squash, mushrooms...how about bread, and if they are lucky they can have water with that.

MMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...now that's good eating Bench!

"I go out with my $30 and bring back dozens of pounds of meat for the poor"
That still has to be butchered and inspected....wonder who pays for that?

By the way, wonder what all those pro-gun politicians like John AshKKKroft, Trent Lott, Tom DeLay, Dick Cheney, the Bu$h Crime Family, etc., have done for the poor?

13. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh, NO BENCH!
My friends and I butcher our deer ourselves...but if that's not good enough for you, then may I introduce you to Hunters For the Hungry, in which money, largely from hunters, goes to pay for the butchering fees.

Hey, what a sec Bench...isnt HFH what this thread is all about?

14. Gee, Belch nothing is ever good enough unless............
it is done exactly the way you want it. See below:

i·de·al·ist (-d-lst) n.

1. One whose conduct is influenced by ideals that often conflict with practical considerations.

2. One who is unrealistic and impractical; a visionary.

Oh! You mean like you do with everyone elses post who don't see things the way you do (which would be everyone)? By the way if you think all hunters are "psychos who like to torture and kill animals" as you put it then it's fair to believe that you think any program hunters are involved in are for "psychos who like to torture and kill animals". Sorry Bench just the facts (something you have yet to present). Now get back to work! Oh that's right you don't have a friggin job. Hahahahahahahaha!
