15-Year-Old Wounded In Hunting Accident

LINCOLN BOROUGH, Pa. -- A 15-year-old boy is in serious condition after a hunting accident in Lincoln Borough on Friday.

The boy suffered a gunshot wound while hunting with friends in woods near Harrison Road.

The Game Commission said the boy fell while crossing a frozen puddle, causing the rifle to fire.

The bullet hit the boy in the back and exited through his shoulder, but it did not hit any organs, the Game Commission said.

and had a kick-back that nearly sent the blade into my neck. We should ban those things... After all, they get abused in every horrer movie made... It's for the chuuuuuuuuulllllllldreeeeeeeen...

3. Sounds like it was probably an older type rifle.

Modern ones have more safety systems to prevent them from going off if dropped, but a lot of older ones like my Enfield are unsafe if jarred or struck. Another reason why I never carry it around with the bolt cocked.

Every gun accident I've heard of was completely avoidable through proper safety practice.

5. P.S. Let's point out the fails here....

1. Unsupervised minor.... against the law.

2. Carrying a chambered, cocked firearm, apparently with the safety off... against any safety training.

3. Being out of control of the firearm (improper handling)... also against good safety rules.

4. Posting this as if it were representative of the vast majority of firearms owners, while not proposing any solution to the problem. If you were to add some commentary about how firearms safety training should be manditory in schools, I'd be on that picket line with you, lending my full support. As is, your straw bales are perilously close to self-assembling into a scarecrow.

Driver education for youths must help some what.

Some states require classes for young adults to get a hunting license, any stats on if there are fewer youth accidents in those that do?

9. I don't know if any such stats have been compiled...

and my search skills don't seem up to the task today. But Safety training in a multitude of other fields has been proven effective, hence the requirements for it in various professions.

I took a Hunter Safety course at summer camp when I was 10. 30-odd years later, I don't remember much from it specifically, other than that it reinforced what my parents had already been teaching me, and later training expanded on. I've also had a metric butt-load of safety training in other areas (I'm a military aircraft mechanic) and most of it overlaps multiple activities, i.e., many safety practices in turbine engine mx cross over to personal vehicle mx, firearms safety, even recreational activities.

That would really get lots of people angry at Democrats.

While you are about it, how about banning other activities that have accidents? Ban knives in kitchens. Ban fire. Ban electricity. Ban nature walks. Ban football, baseball, soccer, basketball, gymnastics, etc. Ban everything.

15. Shouldn't have had it ready to fire when he was just walking around

especially across ice. Glad no one was hurt, and this will likely provide a valuable learning experience for him.
