Apparent robber fatally shot by Indiana homeowner
Salem - State police say a southern Indiana homeowner fatally shot one of two men who had entered his house in an apparent robbery.

Police were searching Wednesday for the second man, who fled from the house near the Washington County city of Salem after Tuesday night's shooting.

The homeowner told investigators that a man knocked on the door asking to use the telephone. As that man came inside, another man wearing a mask entered as well. The homeowner said he retrieved a gun and shot the first man.

7. Unlikely, they have to be completely insane to break in my house.
I drive a marked government vehicle so it would be unlikely while I wasn't at home either especially since I don't carry a firearm.

13. What statement do you have a problem with?
The post said the guy shot the first guy which I assume means the first guy in, who was the very one who, according to the post asked to use the phone. The post states the other guy, meaning the one with the mask, was still being hunted. So the question is, why did he shoot the guy who needed the phone instead of the guy with the mask. Not enough practice? Or, was it indeed because the phone guy was intending to run up the phone bill by calling a 900 number as you suggest? Either way, I hope the next time I ask to barrow someone's phone, the guy doesn't unload his 357 on me before asking some questions. By the way, did the post ever mention if the masked guy had a weapon or not?

15. Maybe he thought the guy asking to use the phone was in cahoots with the guy with the mask

I'm just taking a wild guess here.

Have you ever read the novel "A Clockwork Orange" by Anthony Burgess, or seen the movie version made by Stanley Kubrick? It's about a dystopic future where young criminals run rampant. There's a scene where the anti-hero Alex and his droogs (friends) knock on the door of a home and say "Please help. I need to use your phone. There's been a terrible accident, and my friend's bleeding to death in the road!"

The homeowner lets the boys in, and they proceed to gang-rape the man's wife and beat him until he is crippled for life. The bad boys had masks too.

Maybe the homeowner had read the book or seen the movie, and got the idea that real-life crooks might do something like that.

You know, kind of like a copycat crime.

Or something.

I really don't know what was going on in his mind.

16. So your theory is that these are 2 completely coincidental occurences? LOL.
Who cares if the 2nd perpetrator was armed? It's completely irrelevant to the discussion.

23. root causes! root causes!

Why aren't these brave homeowners out shooting the crack and meth dealers on the streetcorners before these future violent criminals get all addled???

We must go after the root causes, and stop shooting the victims of greedy drug traffickers and the corrupt politicians who enable them, I sez.
