Who is it that's really afraid?
Edited on Thu Dec-24-09 03:40 PM by Fire_Medic_Dave
A popular meme from quite a few of the gun grabbers here is that gun owners want to own guns because of their fear of threats that simply don't exist or while real are incredibly rare. While that may be true of a small minority of gun owners, are they more fearful than those who would limit ones freedoms because of their fear? History clearly shows that those wishing to curtail freedoms are far more fearful than those who choose to enjoy them. Provided I recover from my current illness I will be shooting on Christmas day, to celebrate the birth of baby Jesus and my 2nd Amendment rights. Fortunately I live in a country where both of those freedoms are protected.

2. OK if you say so
Not to piss in your corn flakes but I don't care whether you are afraid of something or not, so you don't have to justify anything to me.

Shooting to celebrate the birth of the baby jesus, however, seems a bit odd to me.

4. Why would that seem odd?
Time on the farm with all the family parents, uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces, grandkids. It's a great time to go shooting. There never is anything good on TV on Christmas day.

14. Not really odd. The "wise men" were armed and had an armed escort.
Of course their arms were swords, but they were very skilled in their use. They were actually high level diplomats from the Parthian Empire and traveled with an escort of a troop of Parthian Calvary. They rode horses as camels were for baggage.

Jesus was born on September 29th, 2 BCE, with the magi arriving on December 25th, 2 BCE. Jupiter entered retrograde on that date and would have appeared to stand still in its own motion at about 60 degrees elevation in the southern sky. To a highly trained observer looking at a clear sky with no light pollution the daily movements of the planets can actually be seen - barely.

In the last few years, there is loads of information that has come to light, due to computerized research and also due to sky programs, that sheds much new light on that event.

But I am getting too far off the guns topic. The magi were well armed, skilled in the use of those arms, (That was part of being a magi.) and would have approved of some modern practice in the defensive use of modern arms.

16. I hadn't realized the dates had been so well established!
I know you didn't want to go off topic, but do you happen to have links to the info that you wouldn't mind posting?

I'm not a Christian, but I'm terribly fascinated with history. :D

20. I will PM you over the weekend.
It is very recent research and is still disputed in many circles. I ran the program for the sky positions myself(RedShift 3.0)and was amazed.

Anybody else that is interested, let me know and I will PM you too.

I don't like the R/T forum. Like the guns forum, it can be very argumentative. Some things I enjoy discussing, but hate arguing over and R/T is one of them.

28. There is a second chance hunt here.
A few times right after the state began this 2nd chance they ran it between Christmas and New Years. Now they run it right after the first of the year so deer hunters have to buy a new general hunting license.

I've seen people do that in a lot of countries. Maybe you should get out more (out of the country, that is).

11. I've made a similar point on several occasions, FMD.
It seems to me that the folks who would like to effectively ban firearms or impose ridiculous restrictions are more fearful, and less rational because of it. They are fearful of law abiding citizens owning firearms while simultaneously ignoring/discounting the very real threat of home invasion/mugging. As I've stated over and over, preparing for a bad thing to happen does not automatically equate to an irrational fear of that bad thing.

How many times have you heard the phrase "I'm scared to death of guns" from an anti-2a proponent? I've heard it fairly often myself. So where do they get off trying to say that I'm somehow living in any state of "fear?"

My wife took me to the ER. Couple of liters and some zofram helped a lot.

We are indeed fortunate to live in this country.

We just have to be sure that corporate interests don't trump individual freedoms.

Hope you feel better for Christmas.

hope your a little better now. I had a similar problem last winter, only coming out the other end. Lost 10 pounds in 3 days. I don't recommend it as a weight control method...

Good luck, get some rest, hope you feel better soon.

30. Nobody ever does anything
for just one reason.

Most anti's have an incorrect caricature image in their heads of all gun owners as knuckle-dragging rednecks and try to treat them like bullies, because everyone knows bullies are cowards inside.

Some of them think when they are talking to gun owners in a place like this they are in an orchard full of low hanging fruit and try to act like bullies. Nobody could hurt them here if they wanted to, so it's the safest way to try to slap people around you dislike, because everyone knows bullies are cowards inside.

Some people are assholes. They're just fulla shit.

Feel better soon and have a good Christmas.
