Advice from a felon: "buy a gun"
"Buy a gun," a member of a recently busted inner-city gang told The Buffalo News last week when asked what could be done to curtail homicides. "Hey, I'm just being honest. You asked."
....

Twice the victim of gunfire — a fact a street cop confirmed — the young man said he views self-protection as the best means of avoiding death on the streets.

The gangs that fight over territory and drugs, he said, are often not well organized.

"It's more like disorganized," he said, asking that his name be withheld.

Police officials {read "politicians or political appointees" as opposed to line cops} don't agree with his advice to take up a gun, but they do say his description of most local gangs is accurate. The only problem is that these disorganized gangs sometimes hit their targets with deadly accuracy.

As a general rule, felons aren't to be trusted. There are exceptions, however, as when a pedophile lays out the danger signs and tactics parents should watch out for.

This is an exception. He actually is "just being honest."

1. If you have ever lived in the poorer parts of an inner city
You learn quickly that police often do not respond too fast to any "incident" reports.

They really take their time.

I remember being in line for "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" in New Town, Chicago once.

Three armed Chicago police kept telling the crowd to line up in staight lines. They were quite insistent about it.

Much better to keep busy controlling noisy young adults than to be out on patrol over in the projects...

2. It often depends on the cop and how long he has been on duty...
The younger cops often respond faster as they love the thrill and the adrenaline rush.

The older cops approaching retirement are counting their days. I guess the thrill wears off after a while.

5. I sat up a couple nights with the Mossberg out, on the couch
Watching over my family as they slept, listening as the police helo orbited around the surrounding neighborhoods, looking for some scum.

Even when the police are 'on the case' your ass may still be on the line before they can help you. Never actually went bad for us, fortunately. I don't regret the loss of sleep those nights. It was the right thing to do.

6. It's never a bad idea.
"When seconds count, the police are only minutes away."

Or minutes.

Or hours.

Or never.
