UPDATED: Intruder killed during home invasion
A 22-year-old was killed late Sunday after he and an accomplice broke into a house in the 5700 block of Sussex Street.

Police say Joseph Taylor and another man, both armed with handguns, entered the residence and threatened to kill an adult female and a juvenile who were inside the home at the time. The suspects began to ransack the house and fired shots in an attempt to intimidate the victims.

Willie Lee Baker told police he arrived home during the robbery and confronted the suspects. Taylor shot Baker, 29, in the leg as the two began to fight, police said. Baker managed to take the gun and shot Taylor once in the head.

Baker and Taylor were taken to LSU Hospital in Shreveport were Taylor was pronounced dead, police said. Baker was treated and released.

1. Both armed with handguns. Zero points given.

6. This is a guns-as-solution-to-guns story. Zero points given to your reason for posting it.
A gun saved the day? Guns started the trouble.

7. A criminal started the trouble. A law abiding citizen ended the trouble.

14. Assuming that we have all the facts. For example, that the men didn't know
each other, that there was a break-in, etc.

We really don't know the details yet, do we?

15. Who cares if they knew each other?
According to the story the criminals were posing a deadly threat to a woman and a child the justification is there.

17. We're only getting one side, right? Suppose the two men knew each other

and were having an argument. One guy gets killed. His friend runs away. The homeowner tells his wife to say it was a burglary.

I DON'T KNOW. I'm just making this up, obviously. But the point is we don't have the facts at this point. Just a police report, with no investigation yet.

18. So you think the victim, his wife and child are all lying?

20. All we have is a police report. Do you even know how old the child is?
Edited on Tue Jan-12-10 10:32 PM by pnwmom
I don't, but the father's only 29, so I doubt the police have interviewed the child.

Do I believe the wife could be lying? ANYONE could be lying.

This is why we have trials, right? So people aren't convicted on the basis of police reports alone.

I'm having trouble believing I'm actually having to make this argument on DU. Innocent until proven guilty. That's our constitutional right.

21. Yes the victim, his wife and child should all be presumed innocent. That's what I'm doing.
The incident took place on Sunday I'm quite sure the child was interviewed by now.

23. The child could be 3 years old for all we know.
The other man -- the one who is now missing -- is also presumed innocent. So is the man who died.

An investigation has to be carried out and then a trial -- unless there's a guilty plea. Until then, we don't have the facts and EVERYONE is presumed innocent.

24. Of course they are all presumed innocent in a court of law.
I'll be happy to hear the accomplices story and consider it once he turns himself in. Juvenile is usually not used to describe a toddler. So until the accomplice gives us his side we'll have to go with what we know so far.

25. Here's another take on what happened that makes it sound less like a burglary.
And more like some kind of dispute. So different news reports have different slants on what happened. Again, this is why we have investigations and trials.

http://www.thetowntalk.com/article/20100111/NEWS01/100111005

Police told KTBS television it happened Sunday night after two people entered the house and made demands of some sort.

There was a struggle between the home’s occupant and one of the suspects. Gunshots were fired and one of the suspects died. A person identified only as the homeowner was hospitalized for injuries described as non life-threatening.

At least that's what your link says.

19. Yes, you are "just making this up". Why?
I suspect the reason is that you don't like the idea of random violence happening to families. Perhaps you like to think that if violence happened in that home, then they did something to bring it to them. By believing that you are able to believe that you are safe from violence because you don't do the things that you think will bring trouble to you.

That belief is an illusion.

22. Because our justice system is based on "innocent until proven guilty."
And there's still a third person out there -- the man who accompanied Joseph Taylor -- and he, like every other defendant, deserves a fair trial.

Under our constitution, we don't determine someone's guilt based on a police report. We have investigations and trials.

30. Yet, you are automatically arguing for the guilt of the resident.
In fact, you are making things up to negate a claim of self-defense. You want the resident to be guilty.

8. Again, until you actually prove that guns cause crime...
...then your point is invalid. You keep saying "guns started the trouble." Where is your evidence to show that such crimes would not occur without guns? How do you contend with issues the UK is having with violent crime yet extremely strict gun control? For once, actually attempt to apply logic to this issue.

10. Your hatred of self-defense is showing.
We know you'd rather those people be dead then use a gun to defend themselves.
