Va. student accused of bringing gun to school

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - A high school student is being accused of bringing a gun to a school in Newport News.

Nineteen-year-old Wayne Raynod King was charged Tuesday with a felony count of having a firearm on school property and a misdemeanor count of having a concealed weapon.

Police spokesman Lou Thurston said a concerned parent notified the principal at Denbigh High School that a student had a gun.

After removing the student from class, a school security officer found an unloaded .380 caliber handgun and rounds of ammunition in his pocket.

If you can find anyone who is advocating that kids bring guns to schools, please inform us; otherwise, I will assume that you continue to support "feel-good" stuff.

I support having full-time armed staff in schools where kids are too young to legally carry, and the removal of the lurid "gun-free zone" signs.

Please keep in mind that Dylan Klebold and his Dad had a last conversation over then-pending concealed-carry legislation in Colorado. They both agreed it should be defeated.

Aren't you getting a little carried away? Laws already prevent kids from having handguns. Frankly, there should be at least some armed adults in schools to lessen the chance of a "schoolyard spectacular," and there should NOT be the enticing "gun-free zone" signs; I mean, you really don't mean to invite the HyperPunk into your kids' schools, do you?

19 years old and still in high school. Betcha he has a rap sheet and betcha it's gang related. He's obviously not going to pass an NICS check so the weapon is illegal and he illegally had it. But there are laws against this so he shouldn't have had it.

However, the article is remarkably devoid of info; I can think up plenty of scenarios for a person to be 19 and in high school. And I hate to perpetuate the common misconception that under-21's may not own handguns.

Either way, he's almost certainly a prohibited person now.

30. I was 19 when I graduated HS

I was held back from entering mainstream school because the school district didn't allow deaf people into public schools (in the early eighties, they all went to deaf school in MN) so we were in a long protracted court battle, which we eventually won.

Way to paint us 19-year-old high school graduates as "gangers". (I am now 29 and currently doing a MA at the moment)

There are legitimate reasons to graduate late. However, in this SPECIFIC instance, 19 years old and in illegal possession of a weapon (he had it on school property) paints a picture of someone who isn't giving it his all. I may very well be mistaken, just looking at the facts presented.

Having a concealed weapon is a misdemeanor, having a firearm on school property is a felony. He has violated at least two firearms laws, and will now likely loose his right to lawfully keep and bear arms for life.

Sad incident but he wanted to carry a gun for the same reason a law-abiding citizen does, for self-defense and the handgun is the choice of 675k sworn law enforcement officers and most of the 42% of 105+m households of law-abiding citizens.
