7-Year-Old Girl Shot In Head On Southeast Side
CHICAGO (CBS) - A 7-year-old girl was in critical condition after she was shot in the head as she rode her scooter on the Southeast Side Wednesday evening.

The girl was shot at 80th Street and Manistee Avenue at 4:13 p.m., according to Chicago Police News Affairs.

South Chicago District police Cmdr. Eric Carter said an off-duty officer witnessed the shooting and police apprehended a motorist and passenger in a car that fled the scene.

The gunmen were near East 80th Street and South Marquette Avenue when they began firing east. One of the bullets struck the girl in the head as she rode her scooter outside her grandmother's home, Carter said.

5. These are bad guys
And bad guys have been doing bad shit since humans first stood up on two legs no matter where in the world they may be.

Note: This took place in the anti-gun paradise of Chicago where citizens have no right to protect themselves against monsters like this.

14. What would have prevented this particular crime? Reread post #5
Other than the little girl being armed, which of course is not going to happen.

22. How would anyone carrying a gun have prevented this particular crime?
Edited on Fri Mar-19-10 06:22 PM by TheCowsCameHome
Just answer that for me.

The little girl got shot in a random act of violence. How would you and your gun have been able to prevent THIS incident from happening?

23. What makes you think a person with a gun could have prevented this?
When the Bad Guys come in shooting, the first person to be shot is not usually savable. The best that can be hoped for in that case is that the first victim buys some time for the rest of the Good Guys to be able to cut short the spree by the Bad Guys.

25. That's just the point, I don't.
Sadly, nothing I can think of could have stopped this particular crime.

Poster #5 seems to think so, though, judging by his second sentence.

26. I think you misread post #5.
At best he is suggesting that a lawful armed response could have stopped the Bad Guys from getting away.

28. That's irrelevant to the issue
The fact is that persons carrying firearms for self-defense can and do prevent some violent crimes from being completed; not this one, admittedly, but some.

The rationale behind gun control laws like Chicago's is that the social cost of restricting private citizens' ability to defend themselves is a price worth paying to prevent incidents like the one under discussion from occurring. Now, when it turns out that the gun control measures do not, in fact, prevent incidents like this, then we may fairly question whether the price of restricting citizens' ability to defend themselves against other violent crime is one worth paying.

29. Thank you...
...for acknowledging that in THIS particular case a private citizen, carrying a gun or not, would have made NO difference in what happened to the little girl. Sometimes yes, but in THIS case, no.

That was my original, and only, point.

What exactly does this little tale have to do with public policy about firearms?

A few people seem to have got it wrong.

Surely someone can tell us! Will it be you???

Handguns are illegal in Chicago.
Possession of handgun caliber ammunition in Chicago is illegal.
Carrying handguns in Illinois is illegal.
Possession of handguns without a FOID card is illegal in Illinois.
Possession of ammunition without a FOID card is illegal in Illinois.
Possession of handguns OR ammunition by felons (which the shooter almost certainly was) is illegal.
Discharging a firearm in city limits is illegal.
Murder is illegal.
Fleeing the scene of the crime is illegal.

Any other laws broken? What additional laws would have stopped this event from happening?

4. None
Which proves we need yet more laws to uphold the ones we have.

I see this happened in the gun-free mecca of South Chicago. What a paradise it must be since guns are illegal.

16. I know, I know!!!

What additional laws would have stopped this event from happening?

Laws permitting all HONEST CITIZENS to acquire, possess and tote around ANY GUN THEY WANT, anywhere they want.

I'm not stupid. I know that's the way and the only way to stop seven-year-old girls, and all other non-involved victims of firearms injuries and deaths and firearms-facilitated crimes, from having bad shit happen to them.

If everybody everywhere ... I mean, all HONEST CITIZENS everywhere ... could acquire, possess and tote around any gun they wanted, no seven-year-old girls and no HONEST CITIZENS would ever have any bad shit happen to them ever anywhere.

Amen.

17. Oh how sad your anti-rights club has become.
I list a dozen or so laws broken and ask what additional laws would have prevented this action, and you reply with nonsense.

Sorry you can't formulate a logical answer to a simple question.

33. That approach has worked in the past.
In the Old West, street crime was almost non-existent, despite the image created by TV and movies.

With honest citizens carrying guns, things get a mite dangerous for street criminals. After all, VT has always allowed that, and they rarely have drive-by shootings.

Further, aggresive enforcement of current gun laws aimed at disarming the criminal element also seems to work well. So do both.

10. Who is more disgusting?
The people who committed this act, or the slugs who try to use such acts to forward their morally bankrupt agenda?

I'd say that it would be a close finish between the two.

Very sad story, nonetheless.

Perhaps you should suggest that to the powers that be. That'll solve the problem.

I hope the little girl fully recovers and these scumbags pay a heavy, heavy price.
