If it was up to John DiGaetano, president of the Second Amendment Club in Pasco County, people who don't know better than to leave a loaded gun on a nightstand would not be gun owners. The Second Amendment Club offers handgun safety courses several times a year.
Friday's incident made DiGaetano angry. He said the safest way to store firearms around children is to keep them in a safe box with a combination lock.
"Any person who has a handgun should be responsible, know how to use it and store it," he said. "Too many people have no knowledge. They aren't interested in firearm safety. They want to have a gun and just put it on their nightstand or in a purse, or something. Some people say they don't need a class because they have a concealed carry permit. "So many people out there think they know what they're doing, and they don't."
DiGaetano said there about 15,000 people are permitted to carry a concealed firearm in Pasco. He said he believes most of them have never taken a gun safety course.
According to sheriff's office records, Ronzino reported on Jan. 4 that a 9 mm handgun was stolen from his car while it sat in the driveway of the house on Freestone.

If you have kids you have a responsibilty to make sure weapons are secured. Takes a couple of seconds to put them back in a locked container.
