Police to allow gun users renew licences with iPhone app
A police force plans to allow gun owners to apply to update their firearms licences using an application on Apple's iPhone.

Sussex Police is designing a series of 'apps' which will let members of the public access news, appeals and other services at the touch of a button.
The force proposes allowing people to make requests to renew shotgun and firearm licences with a new iPhone app as part of a £3m cost-cutting drive. The applicant would then be visited by officers in person.
Gun control campaigners accused police of putting money before lives and urged the force to abandon the scheme.
Details of the plans emerged just two weeks after Derrick Bird, 52, went on a shooting spree in Cumbria with two guns he legally owned and killed 12 people.
Campaigners have demanded stringent and regular mental health checks on all shotgun and firearm licence holders following the shootings

3. Meanwhile back at
the ranch where Molly just got done doing Danny.
If you hate guns and gunowners so much, then go the fuck somewhere else.

7. And the UK's murder rate was just as low (or lower) when British laws were similar to ours now.
The same can be said of Canada. Same low rate before and after.

Of course, our murder rate is trending down (down by more than half now, actually) while the UK's is trending up, so we'll see how long the comparison remains favorable to the UK.

they can own long-range sniper rifles, manually operated AR-15 and probably AK-47 derivatives, shotguns, and whatnot. Probably pretty difficult for the working class to afford, though, which is probably the point.

Until the 1990's, Brits could still own handguns and semiautomatic rifles (as people still can in most of Europe), albeit with similar levels of red tape.

10. It's definitely a class thing
In Germany the rich father of a girlfriend I had looked down on me.

I didn't show any trappings of wealth, drove a "commoner" car, didn't dress rich.

Until he found out I owned a pistol and went shooting regularly.

Suddenly he liked me. Suddenly I was good enough for his daughter.

If I have a pistol I must have money, must be a member of the privileged class.

He didn't know it cost me very little to own, being in the Army at the time.

12. If you look at the issue in the USA,
the gun-control lobby feels much the same way, I think. The Brady Campaign et al are very much OK with upper-middle-class country-club types owning $4000 skeet guns and high-zoot scoped bolt-actions---as long as they have sufficiently patrician styling, of course---but is vehemently opposed to widespread ownership of guns for more plebian purposes by the working class. De facto means testing for gun ownership and carry licensure is a fundamental component of the paradigm.

11. I think the gun-control issue may rise up to bite some butt in Britain...
just as it has done so in the U.S. This is more likely to happen if the controller/banner takes the prohibitionist culture war approach as they have in this country.
