GUNS IN THE NEWS--January 9. 2004
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
6 - Comment on a story by replying to that story.
7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any messages that appear to be personal attacks against another DU-er or violations of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
8 - If you object to these guidelines, do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

1. Three Ga. Girls Safe After Manhunt Ends
"ELLIJAY, Ga. - The frantic manhunt for a jealous ex-husband who allegedly killed three former in-laws and his infant daughter before fleeing with three girls ended near the Tennessee line when the suspect shot himself in the face during a police chase.
The girls — his former stepdaughter and two of his daughters — were in the vehicle with him. One was splattered with his blood, but they were unharmed following the pursuit late Thursday, said Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesman John Bankhead.
The suspect, Jerry William Jones, 31, was hospitalized in critical condition and under armed guard, but "he does not have a life-threatening condition," Vernon Keenan, director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, said Friday. "

3. Club Patron Shot Outside Bar (TX)
"A crowd outside a northeast Houston bar forced a crowd to dodge bullets early Friday morning after a gun battle broke out between a club patron and a constable.
Plastic cups marking bullet casings showed the aftermath of an alleged shootout between a club patron and a deputy constable at JR's Bar on South Richey around 2 a.m. Friday.
"(Constables) kept an eye on them as they got into the vehicle inside the parking lot, which was described to us as a white truck. Someone from that white truck, in the passenger side, armed with a semi-automatic weapon, fired shots toward the club and in the direction of the deputies who were here," Cannon said.
The men took off, and then one of the patrons standing near the doorway went back into the club and said he had been shot, according to officials. "

4. Calvert County boy, 16, is charged with assault in 2 sniper-style shooting
"State police in Calvert County charged a 16-year-old boy with two counts of first-degree assault last night in two sniper-style shootings in Huntingtown, one of them apparently targeting a school bus.
Aaron Daniel Barrett, 16, of Huntingtown was charged as an adult due to the seriousness of the incidents, said Cpl. Rob Moroney. Barrett is accused of using a firearm to shoot at a bus carrying 25 students from Northern High and Northern Middle schools about 3 p.m. Thursday. The bullet did not penetrate the interior of the bus, and no one was hurt. "

7. I guess kids' baseball should be banned
Edited on Fri Jan-09-04 12:16 PM by Romulus
because it teaches them how to swing a bat, and they might go beating people? Maybe home ec should be banned as well, because the cooking portion teaches kids how to cut with knives, and therfore "puts other kids at risk?"

5. 9-Months Later, 2 Charged In Orange Park Robbery, Shooting (FL)
"Clay County sheriff's deputies have made two arrests in a nearly year-old robbery and shooting.
John Furman was charged with armed robbery and attempted murder, and Cyrus Baker was charged with accessory after the fact. On April 15, 2003, two men robbed the Roadhouse Bar and Liquor Store, when clerk Bill Lutz wrestled one man to the ground and was shot three times.
Lutz, who was shot in the leg, arm and stomach, spent 2-½ months in the hospital. But he said he knew police would catch the triggerman. "

6. Firearms case has a sense of deja vu
"A Kansas City man who was convicted a decade ago of running from and shooting at police officers was indicted on federal firearms charges Wednesday.
Roy R. Thornton, 31, was charged with being a felon in possession of a handgun after his arrest early on New Year's Eve. In a hearing after his arrest, U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert Larsen ordered him jailed, saying he was a danger to the public and posed a risk of fleeing.
Thornton has not entered a plea.
According to court records, Thornton accused a police officer of lying when the officer said he saw Thornton throw something down during a foot chase. Officers said they later recovered a .40-caliber handgun."

Link

<snip>

A 29-year-old Walnut Street resident reported to police early Wednesday that he was assaulted, pistol-whipped and robbed by three assailants on Irving Avenue just east of South Jersey Hospital-Bridgeton.

The victim was treated at the hospital, where he received stitches to the right and left side of his head, according to a report by Ptl. Ryan Shinn.

No arrests have been made in connection with the reported armed robbery, according to authorities.

The victim was only able to provide vague descriptions of the three individuals, due to the clothing they were wearing and injuries he sustained.

12. Police prevail in standoff (AZ)
A murder suspect staged a two-hour standoff with police Thursday on the North Side, forcing evacuations and major traffic delays before she walked outside and surrendered.
Officers quickly surrounded Carole Ann Grijalva, 33, and led her away in handcuffs, marking the third arrest made in a Wednesday shooting outside at a Midtown convenience store that killed one man and injured another. Robbery was the apparent motive, police said.
Altogether, more than 70 officers responded to the area, evacuating nearly 20 residents and shutting down one lane of Fort Lowell before Grijalva emerged. "

Louisiana authorities would have smiled placidly and let them go?

Guess that's more of that RKBA "logic" or whatever it is, in action.

Bank robbery has been a federal crime since 1934.

17. Man Charged in Attempted Murder of Deputy (FL)
"Monroe Thornhill, 30, of Fussell Road, was booked into the Polk County Jail on Jan. 1 and is being held without bail. He also faces charges of marijuana possession and carrying a concealed firearm, according to reports.
According to a Polk County Sheriff's Office report, the following events occurred when Deputy Roger Burgess responded to a call about an armed man wearing camouflage clothing walking on Fussell Road on Dec. 28:
After hearing the shots and seeing Thornhill in his mirror, Burgess went to Thornhill's driveway and tried to talk with him.
Thornhill was holding an AR15 assault rifle and a handgun, and he refused to put down the weapons, the sheriff's report said.
Another witness told investigators that he saw Thornhill walk out of the woods later that day with two assault rifles. When the witness asked Thornhill what he was hunting, Thornhill responded he "was hunting sheriffs," the report said."

19. Trouble is just one stool down at Montana's bars
"DEWEY, Mont. — After he shot his dog but before he murdered the jukebox, Gregory Michael Pepin explained to the bartender that he would dearly love to shoot himself. He just didn't have the nerve.
What he did have, as he sat at the bar, was a snootful of tequila and a semiautomatic rifle with 30 bullets in the clip. The bartender, his hands trembling, poured Pepin a drink and tried to talk of happy days.
It was going rather well, Roger Malmquist, the bartender, remembers thinking, when the jukebox suddenly started up. As the bartender tells the story, Pepin whirled on his barstool and fired four rounds into the jukebox. The music stopped. Moments later, the phone rang behind the bar. Pepin silenced it with five more bullets. Then the jukebox, wounded but not yet dead, erupted with another song. Pepin whirled again, fired and finished it off. "
