Sexes differ on the issue of guns
"Sexes differ on the issue of guns

By Mike Seate
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Tuesday, January 6, 2004

OK, so maybe poking fun at the National Rifle Association for holding its 2004 convention in our city after a year where we reached record numbers of gun murders was too easy -- like duck-hunting with an AK-47.

So it wasn't a shock to receive angry letters from members. But what did rattle the old mental re-loader was how gender-specific the whole gun control argument has become.

Letters supporting a better-armed society came exclusively from men, while mail ridiculing the powerful gun lobby came almost exclusively from women.

It was the mothers, the wives, the daughters and the girlfriends who promised to organize protest rallies outside the new David L. Lawrence Convention Center when the NRA rolls into town April 14. They also seemed less seduced by our country's time-honored myths that attempt to link guns with heroism -- which is less than I can say for the guys."

Is this how gun owners see themselves, "as heroic"?

1. Ha, ha, ha...
I challenge ANYBODY to go duckhunting with an AK-47 and then come back to say it's "easy"

"too easy -- like duck-hunting with an AK-47."

Big sky, little bullet and all that.

2. That's quite true, AK47's aren't for ducks, they're designed to hunt.....
humans.

3. No, they're designed to propell a projectile
at high speed.

5. To put a finer point on it...
They're designed to propel a projectile from its current location, to another predetermined destination- in a somewhat accurate manor, and at a high speed.

7. Actually, Multiple Projectiles at Rapid Intervals
Which would make a duck resemble swiss cheese.

8. Most hunters shoot ducks while they are in the air...
I challenge a person to do the same with an AK-47.

11. Or not
"Multiple Projectiles at Rapid Intervals"-CO Liberal

Depending how the selector switch was set, I would think.(unless we're talking about a semi-auto weapon)

Swiss cheese? I'm not so sure of that. Anyone with experience using full auto weapons have any comment on hitting birds in flight with a full automatic or select fire set to automatic weapon?

In any case,I'd wager that hitting birds in flight with an automatiic weapon, even WITH tracer rounds, ain't as easy as hollywood makes it look.

We deployed to the National Training Center in Cali a few years ago. One stage of the training is trying to shoot down an unmaned aircraft with your .50 BMG machine guns.

So, given 12 of these big bad machineguns, you think that plane would have been "swiss cheese", but despite the thing flying back and forth about 50 times, we didn't hit it once....

15. That is what I suspected.
12 50 cal MG's, tracers and all? I bet that was a humbling experience for some of the folks manning those .50's...in the sense that it ain't what ya got, but how ya use it.

I thought as much, as far as shooting ducks from the air is concerned.

Is it safe to say that lots of bullets does NOT equate to lots of hits, possibly not even more than slow carefully placed shots from a semi-auto/pump/bolt/lever action?

If so, will someone please explain that to those that believe otherwise...

17. If you were shooting at one in the deli case.
As a duck hunter I can tell you that it is resonably challenging hitting a real flying duck with a shotgun (the tool actually designed specifically for this task). A shotgun puts and approximately 3 foot diameter pattern of pellets at typical ranges and most people miss more than half the time. I can't imagine how many cases of ammo you would have to go through to get a duck down with an AK-47 which shoots a .3 inch diameter bullet.

9. Try and keep facts out of this, OK?
Another brilliant reporter that learned everything they need to know about guns from the Brady web site. I wonder if they have a Brady "style guide" for reporters? Open with ignorance and go downhill from there.

"AK-47's are evil so let's always use that as a reference point when talking about guns." I'm sure there are people out there that could use an AK to hit a duck, but I hope I never meet them.

At least it's not one of those .223 rounds that "go on forever and would kill someone three or four states away if he shot at a duck and missed.

Nothing like featuring a reporter that uses nice broad stereotypes. "women hate guns", "men love guns". Did he check in with any women's gun groups to get their point of view?

Oh that's right there are no real women, Black, Hispanic or Gay gun owners or groups. All us ignorant gun owners are white, racist, fetishist, lunatic asswipes. Or so I've been repeatedly told.

And the Roman Catholic Church supports gay rights. Or so one of them claimed right here on this board rather than admit to error.

13. "Did he check in with any women's gun groups"
Maybe the freepers were too busy sending hate mail......

"there are no real women, Black, Hispanic or Gay gun owners or groups"
Sure seems that way.....still, it might be a skooch more convincing if the phony ones hadn't gotten uncovered as phonies so easily and often.....maybe next time one of them won't be dumb enough to post an actual link to the far right wing "institute" that whistled them up...or the idiots at that "institute" won't be arrogant enough to brag in public about what "a good trick on liberals" those phony groups are.

16. Keep up the good work
My Pink Pistols training group thinks you are just too hysterical for words.

They can't believe you are for real and still claim to be a progressive. They might want to know if they are still allowed to vote Democrat and shoot, according to your rules, for belonging to the party.

Of course they also don't give a damn what anyone thinks about them either and more of these "pseudo" gay and lesbians keep joining for the basic pistol course every month.

Thanks for the humor.

I think it's hysterically funny that there's a group of right wing asswipes pretending to be gay gun owners who don't have "boo" to say about the conservaitve fucktards like Fred Phelps who want gay people dead and in hell.....but hate hate hate Barney Frank because he wants to close the gun show loophole.

http://www.pinkpistols.org/antigun.html

Maybe because Fred Phelps has never said anything about denying gay people the right to keep and bear arms. What threat is Phelps or his goon squads to a well-armed gay man or woman? I think arming themselves is a very appropriate response to people like Phelps.

Of course several of the groups on the Pink Pistols' list happen to be affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church, one of the most steadfast and unrepentent anti-gay organizations in the world. But when confronted with that fact in another thread on this forum recently MrBenchley dodged the issue by insisting that the RCC supports gay rights!

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=118&topic_id=20608&mesg_id=20675&page=

I'll start believing that when they start ordaining gay (or female) clergy or sanctifying marriages between same-sex couples. Given that it took them over 300 years to admit that they'd given Galileo a bad rap I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that one.

...but hate hate hate Barney Frank because he wants to close the gun show loophole.

Where did they say anything about hating anyone, much less hating to the third power?

Note that the title of the above-referenced page is "LIST of ANTI-GUN, GROUPS, ORG’s, COMPANIES, PRODUCTS & PEOPLE", not "LIST of ANTI-GAY, GROUPS, ORG’s, COMPANIES, PRODUCTS & PEOPLE". Should Barney Frank get a pass just for being gay? Evidently the Pink Pistols don't think so. If you don't like their list you should direct your complaint to admin@pinkpistols.org .

24. Hey, if you're convinced
it says a lot....

But I wonder who actually believes there's a gay group that feels threatened by Barbra Streisand but NOT by Focus on the Family. That's REALLY convincing.

And it's hilarious that last time we looked, this group included an actual weblink to the far right wing "institute" that whistled them up.

If MrBenchley was wearing a Beanie cap he'd be up to about 35,000 feet by now.

Two, two, two Straw Men in one!

The Pink Pistols have never said they were threatened by Barbra Streisand, only that she is anti-gun. And they haven't said they aren't threatened by FotF either.

But what do you expect from someone who thinks the Roman Catholic Church is a gay rights organization?
