NDP to propose long-gun registry changes
By CBC News
NDP Leader Jack Layton is proposing a compromise on the fate the federal long-gun registry to address frustrations of northern, rural and aboriginal Canadians when Parliament returns next month.
But Layton would not commit to making his MPs vote with him in the House of Commons next month against a Conservative backbencher's bill to repeal the registry.
"We're not there yet, and we're continuing to work within the caucus," he told reporters on Monday in Ottawa.
He said his party would introduce legislation in the House to make a first-time failure to register a firearm a non-criminal ticketing offence and to waive fees for new licences.....
Looks like Mr. Layton is taking the Obama approach towards gun control- he realizes it's about as popular as cherry-flavored
thalidomide pops these days, and is letting the blame for it fall upon the Liberals and Conservatives.
Needless to say, Iggy and the Liberals are pissed, and the Conservatives are happy as hell...
