3. Why do you need a silencer? Isn't 60 days a long time to wait ?

cool and in style? wtf like I saw one in Gq and just had to have it? NO, they kick ass becasue after shooting 2 or 3 mags of 5.56 you dont have a ringing ear and a thumping head, they cut the noise by half or more.

23. Sound suppressors (more accurate term than silencers) make shooting easier and more comfortable...
And if you shoot on your own land, in the country, it makes life easier for your neighbors, too, but cutting down the noise. For dedicated shooters in Europe having a suppressor is almost standard equipment. It's only in the US that they're treated as being dangerous, even though they do NOT work the way Hollywood says they do.

5. Easier on the ears for shooter & neighbors for one.
"Silencers" (more appropriately supressors) cut down the sharp crack of supersonic gases, and knock the sound down to merely loud rather than dangerously painful.

6. Silencers are often required of European hunters...
Hunting with one is believed to create less disturbance for other animals. Frankly, they should be allowed in this country, esp. in the field for the reason cited and to save the ears of the hunter (a deer hunter can certainly wear ear protection, but this would render that sense nearly useless when it should be employed for successful hunting). Waterfowl users in the U.S. who hunt near suburban and urban areas can legally fit their shotguns with "metro" barrels (some over 3 feet long) which effectively stifles the report of even "mas load" shells; the shear length of the barrel acts as a silencer.

In case you are thinking of criminal activity, for generations the "hit" weapon of choice by organized crime was a cheap .22 semi-auto, which is rather quiet to begin with, can be easily silenced with home-spun gear, then tossed. Some argument can be made that silencing deer rifles would give poachers an edge in their criminal activity, but here again the weapon of choice for poachers is -- voila! -- a .22 rifle.

Long time to wait? Blame the Government beauracracy that thinks they will be used by every jaywalker to mow down soccer-moms. And don't forget the unConstitutional and arbitrary $200 thank-you-for-allowing-me-the-privilage-of-being-raped-by-government-apes "Tax Stamp".

P.S. If it wasn't such a pain in the ass to get them, they'd cost $50-100 like they do in Europe (instead of $400-1000 + $200 tax here) and be sold no-waiting, over-the-counter. The way it should be.

28. Agreed:
this is like saying "you want a muffler for that car/lawn mower/motorcycle? Please pay the .gov for the "privilege" of tool use.

On the up side, maybe the people that think gun ranges are a "blight" would be willing to "allow" more of them if we could make suppressors more readily available?

a year then shoot your gun. No silencer necessary.

31. Sound suppressors should be mandatory at shooting ranges near urban areas
If they were easier to acquire, there would be fewer shooters with hearing damage.

19. Some are just convinced there is no good reason to own a suppressor.
Edited on Sat Sep-11-10 09:04 PM by friendly_iconoclast
I doubt a one of them could give a cogent reason why they don't like them.

Or they sell hearing aids and see a business opportunity lost.....
