Why do you visit the Justice/Public Safety area?
Edited on Thu Jan-22-04 03:48 PM by TyroneStryker
I'm glad to be a new member of the "gungeon" as I've seen it called. I see there are many differing opinions here, so I'll add myself to the fray. I've also been hanging out in the General area. Here's my first topic:

Why do you visit the "Gungeon"?

What draws you here?

For my part, when I joined, I was in the General area and somebody mentioned a thread in this area. I came in and was hooked. If I hadn't seen that thread, I doubt I ever would have come in.

edit to say: Sorry, I won't be responding to anything tonite, I won't be by my computer, I'll check back in the morning.

27. Hey, you're the one that goes to Larry's
where drug-addled crazies don't seem to stand out from the regular clientele.

"On the night before Christmas, Farron Barksdale was browsing at Larry's Pistol and Pawn in Huntsville.
He left not with a sleigh full of toys, but with a deadly assault rifle. He used the rifle nine days later, according to Athens police Capt. Marty Bruce, to kill two police officers and to sadden an entire community.
According to Sheriff Mike Blakely, Barksdale of Decatur has been involuntarily committed to mental health institutions on at least two occasions.
Blakely said Barksdale conceded after the shooting that he used drugs and was on an alcohol binge when he fired the weapon.

First, you said "deep south". Half hour from Ohio isn't "deep south", is it? Secondly, who said Knob Creek is public? It's not. It's private. Thirdly, you can see Nazi stuff in lots of public places. They're called "museums". Does that mean every museum with Nazi stuff on display is run and staffed by Nazis? I'm sure the Holocaust Museum will be dismayed to find that they're really Nazis...

I live within a 15 minute drive of Knob Creek IN KENTUCKY and I've never seen a Nazi uniform there, or anywhere else in the Commonwealth, outside of a museum.

Knob Creek is a privately owned range that is open to the public - closed on Monday. I shoot there regularly to save some of my friends the drive out to my house. (I live on a farm. I can shoot whenever the mood strikes, but my buds live in Louisville.)

Point of note: Kentucky is not the deep south, although many of us do have the polite manners cultivated there.

50. Not at all. Read the article.
You're mistaken if you believe Mr. Yost reported the presence of such folk. As a matter of record, I attended the shoot. There were no Nazi uniformed types there. Just to double check, I asked a couple of the rangemasters and staff: they saw none of those types. I was told that since it's a privately owned range and - therefore the owners can do so - anyone appearing in such garb would have been asked to either leave or change their attire.

<snip>

Neither could I. But not before watching 10-year-old Emily fire the Heckler & Koch MP5, the preferred weapon of counterterrorist units the world over. This is a good point to note that although I appeared friendly in my NRA ball cap and eager grin, folks here were naturally skeptical of a reporter. They'd been burned too often by TV reporters who come to these shows once a decade and find the tiny percentage of attendees wearing Nazi uniforms or spewing some hokum about the Trilateral Commission. They then go back to their New York editing rooms and paint these extremists as indicative of the "gun culture." But after just five minutes here, it was clear that there's nothing more extreme about these people and their love of guns than the folks who travel the world over collecting Hummels or salt shakers.

Oh sure, there were probably too many camouflage camisoles for the average soccer mom. But for every ersatz Rambo there was someone dressed in Bermuda shorts and a golf shirt. More important, whole families were here, most of whom see a day at the gun range not as a precursor to Columbine, but as good bonding time.

Once again; read the article.

I might also recall the DLC memo that was posted FIVE times by the RKBA crowd, with nary a one of them noticing that the memo ACTUALLY said:
--90% of Americans want to close the gun show loophole
--86% want increased penalties for gun trafficking, just like Charles Schumer proposes
--79% want background checks for ALL firearm transactions
--77% want an assault weapons ban....
--67% want ALL firearms registered

Wonder why those wicked TV reporters are able to find them? Because they're not there?

How desperate is the RKBA spin going to get THIS time, one wonders?

You know, if the RKBA crowd didn't spend their lives diving in right wing cesspools like Newsmax, they might actually have a fact now and then.....

"But the AFA never counted on the power of the Internet. And once the URL to the poll escaped its intended audience, everything went haywire. As of Jan. 19, 60 percent of respondents -- more than 508,000 voters -- said, "I favor legalization of homosexual marriage." With an additional 7.89 percent -- or 66,732 voters -- replying, "I favor a 'civil union' with the full benefits of marriage except for the name," the AFA's chosen position, "I oppose legalization of homosexual marriage and 'civil unions,'" was being defeated by a 2-1 ratio."

http://atrios.blogspot.com/

And by the way, it's noticeable that the RKBA crowd is AGAIN trying to hide what the gun rights people are actually saying and doing...as Iverglas noted some time ago, every dollar the NRA handed out went to politicans who were also opposed to reproductive choice and environmental protection laws, and every dollar the Brady Center handed out went to liberals who were in favor of reproductive choice and pro-environment.

Too TOO funny. Guess who opposes them.

"Reno, Nevada-- The National Rifle Association, holding its annual convention in this dry desert city, took an opportunity Sunday to demonize the gay and lesbian community with inflammatory homophobic rhetoric.
Anti-gun talk show host Rosie O'Donnell was called a "freak" by one speaker for her recent admission that she's a lesbian. O'Donnell had a much publicized disagreement with pro-gun actor Tom Selleck in 1999 on her talk show. Selleck walked off the show during taping over O'Donnell's remarks.
Debbie Schlussel, a frequent guest on The Howard Stern Show and an avid supporter of the NRA referred to O'Donnell when she said, "She's not cool. She's a freak." Schlussel went on to bash actor Jude Law who recently admitted in an interview that he hesitated to handle a gun in the filming of his latest movie fearing it would contribute to people thinking guns were cool. Schlussel referred to the heterosexual Law as a "girly-man".
Kelly Anne Conway, a conservative pollster, droned on for some time about how the "liberal" media has forced changes in the public school curriculum that put gay and lesbian tolerance ahead of the basic studies of math, English and History. "They're so worried now about how many mommies Heather has that (the teachers) run out of time" Conway went on to state venomously that gay and lesbian issues aren't important to "real" Americans.
Grover Norquist, an NRA Board Member and columnist for American Spectator Magazine, not to be outdone, put forth the barb; "we don't have annual parades for gun owners so everyone can appreciate that gun ownership is an alternative lifestyle and look at how great we are." He also quipped that liberal Americans "don't want (men) to date women." "

http://gaytoday.com/garchive/events/050102ev.htm

Guess which of the figures named in that story landed on the "Pink Pistols" hate list? Here's a hint: it was the only gay person named.

21. MrBenchley has distorted the article almost beyond recognition here
The article did NOT say that there were people in Nazi uniforms at the machine-gun shoot he attended in Knob Creek, KY; rather that articles in the press about machine gun shoots usually seek out and highlight such oddities.

..."This is a good point to note that although I appeared friendly in my NRA ball cap and eager grin, folks here were naturally skeptical of a reporter. They'd been burned too often by TV reporters who come to these shows once a decade and find the tiny percentage of attendees wearing Nazi uniforms or spewing some hokum about the Trilateral Commission. They then go back to their New York editing rooms and paint these extremists as indicative of the "gun culture." But after just five minutes here, it was clear that there's nothing more extreme about these people and their love of guns than the folks who travel the world over collecting Hummels or salt shakers....

http://www.opinionjournal.com/la/?id=110004165

The only fury that erupted in the previous J/PS thread was outrage over MrBenchley's continual misrepresentation of what the article in the WSJ actually said.

8. The first forum...
I ever saw on DU was the dungeon. I left the Democratic party in 1994 because of anti-gun policy and stayed well clear of politics until I found DU a couple years ago. I read for a long time before I registered. The anti-gun arguments I heard on this board inspired me to get involved and vote again. Folks long gone like thinktank and hampsterdancer were interesting to watch argue, before I registered.
I would like to have "debated" thinktank and known hampsterdancer.

I frequent the 'dungeon because there is alot of misinformation reguarding guns, assault weapons, the AW ban, gun owners, pro-gunners, gun laws, etc. Also because people need to show the anti-gunners that not all gun owners are enemies of the Democratic Party.

It IS addicting, though sometimes it takes on the attributes of a root canal.

Don't tell anyone(it would ruin the J/PS reputation), but occasionally, most of us even agree on something.
