Senate, House bills filed to clear sale of S. Korean guns

Legislation to lift the US State Department’s blockade on the sale of some 100,000 or more World War II and Korean War era Garand rifles and M1 Carbines to the US market by the South Korean government has been filed in both houses of Congress.

Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT), with Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT) as co-sponsor, has announced introduction of legislation to allow American-made guns that were given or sold to a foreign government to be re-imported and sold in the US.

2. Woo hoo. Now if only I could afford one.
I'd love a Garand for historical reasons if nothing else, but even the $500 for a CMP model would be too much for my pocketbook right now. :(

4. You betcha: Collectible Firearms
Maybe I'll finally be able to upgrade from an SKS to a Garand.

Who knows, even get to try Service Rifle matches.

5. Yup, the M-1 Garand the favorite of gangs and drug dealers
Nothing says "control of the streets" and more gang violence like a 9+ pound collectors rifle that sells for around $550, only holds 8 rounds and is next to impossible to conceal, even in an SUV.

<sarcasm duly noted>

6. Rifles of any type are the least misused guns in the USA, and these are antique collectibles.

8. Garand could be a good deer gun.
But you might have to do something interesting to limit the en-bloc clip capacity for use while hunting per local state laws.

You never know...
The South may rise again...
Zombies don't care how I voted...
It takes 911 an average of six minutes to get to my house...
Victims that shoot back live longer...
And you never know when the British might come looking for their back taxes.

20. I can think of four prominent liberal criminologists that disagree.
Edited on Tue Nov-09-10 08:28 PM by jazzhound
Pity for your emotion-based meme that four liberal criminologists disagree. Their credentials on this subject far exceed yours and mine.

Kathleen Daly, James Wright, Peter Rossi and Gary Kleck all believed at one time in the value of gun "control". Their beliefs changed dramatically once the evidence of their studies on the guns/violence issue revealed that gun "control"
had been worthless in curbing violence:

http://www.amazon.com/Under-Gun-Kathleen-Daly/product-reviews/0202303063/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1

http://www.amazon.com/Targeting-Guns-Social-Institutions-Change/product-reviews/0202305694/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1

Don Kates is probably best described as a left-leaning Libertarian. His book (co-authored with Gary Kleck) is a fantastic starting point for those with the integrity to challenge their beliefs on the guns/violence issue:

On edit -- one review from this group:

The work presented in this book stands as a shining example of how social science research should be conducted. The authors' ability to set aside their preconceptions regarding gun control establishes their qualifications as preeminent researchers in the field and true professionals (as though this was necessary). Contemporary social science research is too often lacking in integrity; thankfully, these practitioners have made a contribution to the truth rather than some political ideology. The work cannot be classified as conservative or liberal. Rather, it represents a full and exhaustive exploration of the dynamics associated with the gun control debate as it is framed today. True students of the field should be grateful.

I want one of each, and my FFL will allow me to have them shipped straight to my home with no wait, no background check, and no California fees or taxes.

28. They're just rifles.
These are big mucking military rifles. Not the sort of thing a criminal is going to use to commit crimes with. More people die every year from hands and feet than from rifles.

34. What we NEED is laws that punish people for who and what they hurt, not what they own.
Imagine if there was no black market over which to fight. Maybe all that violence you attribute to guns is actually the fault of failed government policies based around attempting to prohibit access to things people want that could be gotten peacefully absent state intervention.

13. You intend to carry an M1 Carbine on your Harley?
Wouldn't an SKS or a Mini-14 be just as effective and cheaper? Not just for the gun, but for the ammo.

Nothing else belongs on a 1942 WLA.

Edit: Well, I suppose a Thompson or Garand would be acceptable.

15. I beg to disagree

The classic weapon for the WLA is the M1928A1 Thompson submachinegun.

I suppose a carbine would be acceptable if you didn't live in a Free State.

18. Ahh, a period piece!
That's alright then. I had these horrible images of an antique rifle sitting holstered on a dirt bike or something. :D

And I'd second your choice of the M1 Carbine. I imagine the Thompson would be bulky with the full size magazines, and the greater weight of the Garand might throw off the balance.

19. Yeah, I'd have to find a different rifle to go with a Harley MT350.
Being that it was sold to the UK, maybe I could get away with a Para-FAL and no one would complain...

For these guns, so they will sell fast. A lot of people are going to buy them just to get a gun that was banned from importation

38. As today is Veteran's Day

There's no reason these 'veterans' shouldn't come home. Where else is the stark difference between freedom and repression in greater evidence than across the 38th Parallel?

The soldiers that sacrificed to win that freedom are in their eighties, to preserve a few of the rifles they carried is a fitting tribute.
