I am committed to supporting a pro-gun Democrat in the 2016 party primaries
I don't know who that will be, but I am eager and hopeful that a pro-gun, unambiguous supporter of the Second Amendment will be a major contender for the party nomination in 2016.

Ideas as to who you think it could be?

He is a Dem., he has an A rating from the NRA, he speaks Arabic, and he fights hard to get Montanan's better health care.

5. They would be if some of them had their way. Let's work to see that they don't.
To pretend that some very prominent Democrats aren't anti-gun is ahistorical.

22. Sure they are
Obama supports gun-control big time. He attacks the Second Amendment by putting extreme gun-grabbers on the Supreme Court.

I'd favor candidates that support the 2nd Amendment too, but there is a Constitution and a whole shitload of other amendments that are just as important to me.

16. bill has a lot of baggage
his term as governor here in New Mexico, was tinted by cronyism, and corrution... remember that he did turn down down a cabinet post, for suspicion of pay to play? while cronyism is nothing new to New Mexico, we are a big enough party, that he could have placed competent people in positions of power..

As a life long native Democrat, i felt his administration was an embarrassment.. i expected much better..

... and there is far more support for getting out of Iraq than banning guns.

This whole "Hands Across The Aisle" approach ain't gonna lead to any new gun control laws.

That such a candidate be an unambiguous supporter of the 2nd Amendment, or that he or she be a Democrat?

10. Your post implies a false dichotomy. It is possible to be both.
Edited on Thu Nov-25-10 06:36 PM by friendly_iconoclast
Two examples have already been given in this thread: Brian Schweitzer and Bill Richardson.

I'd also go further and state that the institutional support for gun control amongst Democrats is not written in stone

and can be dispensed with- much as the unwritten but very real support for racial discrimination was largely eliminated from

the Democratic Party. Motivated Democrats can help make that happen.

12. Yeah---And A Poll In The DU Guns Forum Leading Up To Obama's Election....
...indicated that 45% of participants were willing to vote Republican on account of guns policy---with another 3% considering staying at home on election day, just to make things more difficult for Democrats. "False dichotomy"? Like hell it is.

You're the same one who bemoaned that a gun ownership poll at DU was non-representative due to self-selection, yet you want to hold up another poll as being accurate?

Which is it, have it, or eat it? You can't do both.

eta: And that's 45% of how many respondents?

18. Please Post A Link To That Gun Ownership Poll.

I don't recall my posting a gripe about "self-selection" in a poll (as valid a point as that may be), but I'll admit it if I'm wrong. I trust you'll do likewise if you've made an error regarding my participation.

And by the way---I dragged that earlier poll into the big forums any number of times for people to see, and I heard barely a whimper of protest from DU Gun Enthusiasts. Interesting to see you raising questions about it at this point in time.....

20. I would have to have had a time machine to object originally.
Are you asserting that lack of participation / objection is tacit endorsement of some position?

I'm sorry, I don't keep an eye on every forum, all the time. There's no 'bat signal' that does up in this forum when someone mentions firearms somewhere else, much as some like to think so.

15. No, it IS a false dichotomy, since it posits only two possibilities exist where there actually more
For starters, there's always the option of voting for a pro-RKBA Democrat in the primaries, but voting for whoever becomes the Democratic candidate in the general elections. This is what I do a lot of the time. For example, given the choice in this year's senate election--Patty Murray v. Dino Rossi--I voted for Murray, but she was not my pick to be the Democratic candidate, partly (though by no means entirely) because of her stance on the RKBA.

In the 2008 presidential election, my preference was for Bill Richardson (whom I wrote in on the ballot, but only after I was pretty certain Washington was going to go to Obama). There was no way in hell I was going to vote for McCain, especially not with Caribou Barbie in tow.

23. It most certainly is a false dichotomy. I gave you two Democrats who support gun rights...
...and are at least plausable Presidential candidates.

You gave us an unlinked reference to an unscientific poll.

As the saying goes: Your are entitled to your own opinion. You are not entitled to your own facts.

As Euromutt says downthread, I'm willing to (and have in the past) back an anti-gun Democrat in the general elections.

But I damn well like having a choice in the primary.

36. Hard to say.
I will tolerate someone who is an ambiguous supporter of the second amendment, but I will not tolerate someone who is an ardent foe of it.

See my ballot in my sig. I voted for every Democrat on the ticket except the one with the F rating from the NRA.

14. There are anti-gun Democrats? Whoever would have known? I really wouldn't worry
to much about 2nd amendment rights with the terrified weasels that currently run under the name "Democratic". I doubt the lot of them represent more than a fart in the wind in any serious effort to control firearms. That died in 1994. Rest easy.

27. Channeling Bill Clinton
Well, it depends upon how you define anti-gun Democrats.

I'm sure one can fish up anti-gun bills and amendments that have been filed since 1996 (remember Lautenberg), but the fire in the belly approach of the 1994 Ugly Gun and Magazine ban is gone.

However, there remain, unfortunately, a lot of anti-gun Democrats, including the President of the United States. Obama hasn't pursued an anti-gun agenda, and in fact he's signed carry in National Parks and guns on Amtrak legislation.
