Legless man kills armed burglar crawling through his window who shot at him
A legless man in a wheelchair who fatally shot a gun-toting intruder yesterday is unlikely to be charged, police said this morning.

Rocco Bombara shot once after the intruder had fired two rounds from a rifle as he crawled through a window early yesterday at the Leland Point Apartments in Baldwin Borough, police Chief Michael Scott said.

"Preliminary indications are that Mr. Bombara will not be charged," Scott said.

-----

He said the intruder was halfway through the living room window and fired a rifle twice into the apartment. Nicco Bombara said his father, who carries a handgun, returned fire once.

1. Awesome! I love stories about the underdog blowing bad guys straight to hell.
It totally justifies all the wrongful deaths at the hands of those bearing firearms.

9. More on the story
-----

The man who opened fire, 51-year-old Rocco Bombara, did so after Mr. James-Watson appeared with a rifle in the front window of his home in Baldwin's Leland Point Apartments just before 2 a.m. Chief Scott said people inside the apartment told police they heard a noise, then saw a rifle-barrel appear through the Venetian blinds.

Mr. Bombara, a double-amputee who uses a wheelchair, yelled for everyone to drop to the floor before he "either fell out of the wheelchair or threw himself out" and grabbed a pistol he kept under the wheelchair's cushion, the chief said.

Mr. James-Watson fired his weapon from outside the window, striking Mr. Bombara in the hand before Mr. Bombara returned fire, hitting the intruder in the chest. Police said Mr. James-Watson fired twice, while Mr. Bombara fired a lone round.

Police found him collapsed outside the apartment. Detectives are still trying to determine why Mr. James-Watson, of McKees Rocks, apparently tried to enter the Bombara apartment, Chief Scott said.

11. Accounts like this ...
... cause me to wonder whether the anti-force crowd would assert he should have attempted to retreat.

A home invader armed with a rifle is a pretty fucking scary scenario. Seems almost like the deceased KNEW he was going to encounter someone inside.

21. In all honesty, depending on the quality of the wheel locks on the chair.
He may start looking like one of those spinner fireworks...

May have to balance it out with another gun on the other side of the chair.

14. Why didn't he use his fists, or just run away?
Gosh, just the other day someone was telling me that people should not use a firearm to defend themselves, they should use their fists or run away!

I wonder why Mr. Bombara did not use his fists or just run away? Oh that's right. Because he couldn't.

16. Doesn't matter
Whether he could or couldn't, he was in his own home and as far as I'm concerned, he didn't have the obligation to do either. A thug was crawling through his window, firing a rifle into his home, he shot the guy. So be it.

I have a three stage system, an alarm, a dog and a 12 ga. pump at the ready. If the alarm doesn't scare them away they will get chewed on by the dog. If they aren't in full retreat by the time I bring the 12 ga to bear and identify 100% that the intruder is not my wife or daughter, too bad, at that point there is a good chance they will get ventilated with 00 buckshot, with apologies to no one.

My first duty is to protect my family in their home. If somebody makes the poor choice to break in and put us in fear of our lives they have no one to blame except for themselves for the outcome.

17. Your 3 stage system is
is perfect. Mine is a 4 stage system and it is perfect too.

By the time the intruder gets to the 3rd or 4th stage, there is no doubt and no mistake. Please google "cheap home security" and you'll find it cheap to protect yourself, your family and your stuff. shooting an intruder should always be the last option.

18. Absolutely
Shooting somebody is the last thing I'd ever want to do but I would damn sure do it if they persisted in putting me in fear for my life or the life and safety of my family. I have a feeling though, of the alarm didn't scare them off once they got to meet the dog they would be high tailing it out of there.

24. Relatives of the dead thug always say this type of stuff:
James-Watson's sister Stephanie James told WPXI-TV that he died on his 19th birthday.

"I want everyone to know that he wasn't as bad as how everybody is going to portray him," she said. "He was a good person, a good brother, a good uncle. He worshipped my daughter, and my daughter loved him."

The above is from the linked article.
