What law would you enact to stop any particular gun crime?
This might be a fun exercise for those in favor of gun control.
I'll grant that it might be difficult also, since many news stories don't give as many details as you might need to come up with an answer. Give it a try; take any news story where a gun was used by a criminal and tell me what law, if in place prior to the crime, would have stopped the crime from happening.

1. My very short list
Extend the NICS system to private transfers. Require that the seller perform a background check for a nominal fee (which can be passed on to the purchaser) and retain a copy of the background check results (sans purchaser's name, info, etc....only the gun's serial number and results of the background check will be retained).

This will exonerate the seller in the event that the purchaser, after successfuly passing the background check, goes on to commit a crime with the gun.

This will not prevent any crimes, as there really is no way to prevent a person from attempting to commit a crime, but will prevent some of the sales of weapons without background checks through private transfers.

6. That is the Loophole...closed
$10 or so and either email or snail mail the receipt with a control number. $250 fine for not doing so and it would increase exponentially for further offenses.

8. It would be so easy to implement...
the NICS system is in place and the nominal fee for using the system would pay for its use.

2. Possibly the best idea I've ever heard of
is a digital fingerprint sensor which would allow only the gun owner to fire the gun and is recharged by the act of pulling the trigger. However, this would not be suitable in a family home situation; suppose the owner was away and another family member needed to defend him/herself?

That's one very good idea, but it needs to be refined.

5. Is that something that you would..
..require as mandatory or just have the technology available for those who want it?

7. My idea...
1. Make it a felony for a convicted felon to have, in any way, in his possession, a gun. Have a gun in hand, go to jail.

2. Make it a felony to provide a convicted felon, in any way, a gun.
Give felon a gun, become a felon unable to have guns, and go to jail.

Of course, somebody would have to convert this to legaleze to make it into a law.

I have been told that the law already does this. Then, let us enforce it. An unenforced law isn't a law, it's a suggestion.

This law would do nothing to stop first time offenders; it would do wonders for second timers and those who provide them weapons.

12. Already done
Has been that way for years. Oftentimes, prosecutors will plea-bargain the charges away. If you want more enforcement, support Project Exile/Project Safe Neighborhoods.

9. You guys aren't playing the game right!
Snip something from 'Guns in the News' or elsewhere, then paste it here and tell us your gun control law that, if in place, would have prevented this crime from ever happening.

For example:

1 Dead, 1 Wounded In Tattoo Parlor Shooting
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ibsys/20040128/lo_kcra/1977743

I think that if it there were a law making it illegal to carry a gun at a tattoo parlor this crime would not have happened.

10. I disagree....
If there was a governmental program of early-childhood indoctrination that creates American automatons who, through repeated sensory depravation and aversion therapy techniques, vomit at the suggestion of firearms...that would prevent this crime.

Not a single suggestion from the empty heads in the gun control crowd as to what laws might stop crimes.

16. Personal opinion
I feel that most gun control laws are so poorly written that they are very nearly unenforcable.
In fact, they are so poorly written that I suspect they were written by the NRA in a effort to discredit gun control laws.

how ugly what the RKBA crowd calls "fun" is.

Here's an idea....why don't you see if you can find some NRA propaganda explaining why that is? Maybe it will be on the "Clinton gun ban" page you thought was so ducky.

14. automatic death penalty for gun ownership
In my perfect world only the military and police could own guns. If any person other than that was found to own any type of gun they would be shot on sight by the military or police. Eventually only the good guys would own guns and we could all be safe.

1. Wichita's bluesmen mourn slaying of one of their own

"Thomas "Gene" Metcalf sang the blues, played the blues and died a blues man on his 80th birthday.
He drove a Lincoln Town Car with "MR BLUES" on the vanity plate.
But the man once imprisoned for shooting someone became a shooting victim himself. During an apparent robbery, three men came into his home in the 2100 block of North Erie around 7 p.m. on Thursday and left him with at least three gunshot wounds. He died Saturday."

I would outlaw the carrying of a firearm while engaged in home invasion.
