This is just a hypothesis, and is not intended as a slur on Japan or its people:

Testosterone promotes sexual appetite--in men and women. It also fuels physical agression--legal and illegal violence. Higher testosterone in males is a prime reason for higher sexual drive in men and higher enjoyment of dangerous pursuits and higher levels of violence and criminality. It also leads to a higher masculine sexual appetite.

Men with low testosterone would be less interested in violence as well as sex. Perhaps this helps account for Japan's lower crime rate; Japanese men have, on average, less testosterone (and falling rates) than their American counterparts.

As I said, this is simply a hypothesis; I put it forth as a possible alternative to the "they don't allow guns therefore they are less violent" hypothesis.

Neither do I draw any conclusions about the relative evolution of races from it.

Some racist premises are true. People once argued that black people couldn't run long distances due to lack of character. The premise-- whites did better in long distance events--was true. However, the current world records in many long distance events (held by Africans) disprove the conclusion.

More people are killed artificially by the hands of human beings in japan than in the USA per 100,000. The difference is that the Japanese direct violence more against the self than others.
