Casting a movie in the J/PS forum...
The movie is "Platoon"

I'll be Sgt Elias....the early hero/martyr who is a good fighter but tires to escape through the use of drugs (in my case fine wines)...

1. I guess I'll be the NVA soldier...
...who strapped on the explosive pack and ran into the HQ.

That's what it feels like around here sometimes.

2. never seen it

Were there perchance any women in it?

I've done a similar game on another board. Pick an actor to play each person, based not on a particular script but on impressions of the parties and the various roles the actor has played.

Damned if I can remember whom anyone picked to play me.

I'd take Richard Dreyfuss for Benchley, and ... gotta ask google who plays Josh in WestWing, Jane Kaczmarek's husband ... Bradley Whitford, to play DoNotRefill.

Not meaning to hijack, just didn't get dealt into the original game.

Specimens huddled around Wayne LaPierre chanting "the gun is the law" while civilized people look on in disgust and horror?

37. I know you were being sarcastic, but
The Island of Dr. Moreau fits Justice/Public Safety pretty well, and therefore it's actually funny. May I suggest that J/PS is the South Park version? I nominate beevul to be the monkey with four butts.

9. I had to look Whitford up....
Edited on Wed Jan-28-04 05:37 PM by DoNotRefill
he's way too skinny and has way too little hair to play me in the movie.

Personally, I've always seen myself played in movies by a heavily armed cross between John Candy in "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles", and Dennis Hopper in "Blue Velvet". (Pabst Blue Ribbon!!!)

:silly:

BTW, Iverglas, don't get offended, but I think Judy Densch should play you in whatever movie we make... :)

I'd vote for Peter Lorrie for Bench....

13. yes, but
Bradley Whitford / Josh is a sensitive new age man.

Judy Dench. Well, so much for sensitive. I really am not quite that old, despite how it might look to a rugrat. ... blast google ... So far I've ascertained that she was born in a year of the dog, how useful; 1934? Yes, Dec 9, 1934. Well hell, she's not quite as old as my mother. Perhaps you are thinking of Judy Dench as she was in, say, 1970 ...

I would *never* have proposed John Candy for anyone. I'm just way too sensitive. Besides, he's dead. Canadian, though.

I remember. Somebody did propose Vanessa Redgrave for me. That's alright. (Waaay to skinny, Vanessa is; maybe in her sister Lynn's body, before Weight Watchers ...) She's old but good, a proper socialist of course, and a similarly twice unsuccesful candidate for office. I may travel to Toronto to catch her in a rare stage appearance next month.

I might propose a Baldwin for CO Liberal. Which would of course be a compliment. Perhaps Daniel, in Homicide. A gun-totin' CO Liberal.

Vanessa Redgrave ... can't find anything specific about her and firearms control, other than some right-winger's claim to like her despite her gun control stance; she earns the contempt of a poster at the site of Canada's "Law-abiding Unregistered Firearms Association" <sic>for no specified reason other than being left of Atilla the Hun ... and yikes:
http://www.shop-fast-smart.com/shop-item_id-6301216601-search_type-AsinSearch-locale-us.html
she was in A Man for All Seasons with ... well, two guesses. She doesn't seem to have made it to his outfit's hate list. Well, I'll take her despite her bad taste in castmates. Maybe he wasn't loony yet in 1988?

21. Ah. I don't watch West Wing...
And I don't see myself as being new age/sensitive, rather I see myself as being just not quite as Neanderthalish as gun owners are rumored to be. I tried the "sensitive" route in the '80s, and it worked well for generating relatively inconsequential relationships, but I gave it up around 1992, when I became involved with my wife. One of my former girlfriends that I dated in the '80s described my MO as being "mildly interested in seeing how long it would take me to get into a woman's pants" with the connotation that I kept looking at my watch and would move on "if the big hand went all the way around once" with no results. I'm not sure if that was a compliment or not, but my methods worked pretty well (and I dated her for 18 months) so I'm not complaining. ;) Now, of course, since I'm married, I can give up pretenses and just be myself, which works well. My wife firmly believes that all men are pigs, but hey, as she likes to tell her friends when talking about me, "He's MY pig now!!!"

As for Judy Dench's age, I have no clue how old she is (I thought she was 50-60-ish), just that she's older than I am. I was referring to the fact that she can do the whole heavy-duty authority "not to be messed with" thing perfectly. I would have suggested Helen Mirren (who has that whole attitude thing down, too), but IMHO she hasn't aged gracefully (while Ms. Dench remains quite attractive), and I didn't want to insult you.

Peace!

34. I know, I know

After all, Judy Dench did play Queen Victoria! I do suspect Judy is more easily amused though.

As for Judy Dench's age, I have no clue how old she is (I thought she was 50-60-ish), just that she's older than I am.

Like I was saying ... rugrat. (She's almost 70. But we do mainly see her in reruns. Hell, even Mary Tyler Moore looks better in reruns.)

But if you had girlfriends in the 80s ... then I have a sister who's just possibly younger than you. Bingo; we're the same generation. ;)

Mind you, I could still be old enough to be your mother, so due respect will still be expected.

And always remember: the definition of "middle-aged" is "how old your parents are".

14. not a clue
But speaking of Judy Dench, how about Tea With Mussolini?

The male roles, as I recall them, would be Mussolini and the teenaged English son who has to dress like a girl to stay out of danger. So who wants to be Cher?

This was the first movie I dragged the co-vivant to. (In nearly 5 years, we've been to 3. After I bored him to tears a second time with Gosford Park, we agreed to Nemesis as the next effort. I slept through the big battle scene. What have they done to Star Trek lately??)

Anyhow, we arrived at the box office in the rundown east-side theatre where it had ended up, and joined a line of pudgy women in stretch pants. (I was dressed for dinner rather than in my natural attire.) Middle-Aged Chick Flick. When we sat down, he craned his head around and counted 4 other men in the place. He turned back in his seat, folded his arms smuggly, and said "yeah, but we're the ones gettin' it."

Unlike those poor suckers who had to sit through Titanic in hopes of it ...

So, who thinks he's Leonardo diCaprio?

Speaking of Star Trek, Enterprise hour approacheth, for what it's worth.

HA!

I forgot that Johnny Depp was in it.

On edit:

Platoon always reminded me a lot of Philip Caputo's A Rumor of War. Though Platoon is a good Hollywood flick, I recommend A Rumor or War for a more realistic 'innocence lost' Vietnam war story.
