Three officers wounded while serving warrant at Florida home. CNN saying two are dead.
Breaking news. CNN says two are dead. Not confirmed yet.

Lets face it. The NRA WANTS people to think they need a gun. They want to make you scared and paranoid so you buy guns and the gun business makes more money and they get more members.

So we have 1000s carrying concealed when 99% will never need to use it but MANY hope they get to someday.

The "gun culture" is a real issue. But all here will deny it.

Too bad the officers serving the warrant were not armed....wait...whoops...they were.

Oh I know, we need guns to stop the government from overthrowing us. What a joke.

4. Even overlooking the human cost
can local PD's afford to send in a f*cking SWAT team every time they need to serve a warrant?

Out of control.

5. SWAT teams indicate the person receiving the warrant was a badass person
This person OBVIOUSLY has broken the law before and was probably prohibited from owning/having a weapon.

No additional gun law anywhere would stop that.

69. As a matter of fact they can afford to send in the SWAT team even when it's not needed
Most departments that have a SWAT team have very little use for it in the way of hostage crises, barricaded suspects, etc. so to justify the team's existence, it gets sent out to conduct even the most minor search or warrant serving job. According to the Baltimore Sun (http://articles.baltimoresun.com/2010-02-24/news/bal-md.hermann24feb24_1_raids-officers-part-ii-crimes), over half (105 out of 195) the raids carried out by Prince George's County police's SWAT team during the second half of 2009 were related to non-violent offenses. The team conducted, on average, one raid a day.

I heartily recommend reading Overkill: The Rise of Paramilitary Police Raids in America by Radley Balko http://www.cato.org/pubs/wtpapers/balko_whitepaper_2006.pdf Yes, I know it's from the Cato Institute.

In 2008, one guy with a knife charged into a police station in Shanghai and stabbed nine cops, six of whom died as a result. It's more a matter of wanting to inflict harm on law enforcement than anything.

26. According to the OP's unlinked story:
Authorities have been trying to locate the suspect for weeks, Harmon said, using both uniformed and undercover officers. The officers went to the home about 7 a.m. Monday to talk to a "young lady" regarding his whereabouts, but did not expect him to be there, the chief said.

The woman told the officers the man was in the home's attic, Harmon said.

The officers went after the man, who fired at them from the attic, he said. One of the officers remained in the attic after being shot.

stuff? In the CNN article http://www.cnn.com/2011/CRIME/01/24/florida.officers.shot/index.html?hpt=T2 they don't mention "military style" or "no warning." They mention that the "young lady" at the house told them where he was hiding. Police always announce that they are cops when going into situations such as that.

don't have the police searching for them for weeks, then have to hide in the attic with a firearm to try to evade arrest. I'm thinking this guy had some serious issues even before deciding to kill a couple of cops. He didn't just "suddenly snap".

Why do you think they were looking for him? Maybe to give him a McDonald's gift card for wearing a seat belt?

59. People hoping they get to use it.
Lets face it. The NRA WANTS people to think they need a gun. They want to make you scared and paranoid so you buy guns and the gun business makes more money and they get more members.

Not sure what two police officers getting shot has to do with the NRA. The NRA does what it's 4+ million members want it to.

So we have 1000s carrying concealed when 99% will never need to use it but MANY hope they get to someday.

I carry a spare tire in my car. Is this because I'm looking forward to the day I can use it? I have life insurance. Is this because I'm looking forward to the day I can use it? I have smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Is this because I'm looking forward to the day I can use them?

Of course not. Oh, I'm sure there are some Rambo-wanna-bees out there who are salivating at the prospect of being a hero with a gun. But most people don't look forward to using tools that have been procured for use during times of extreme crisis, because they don't savor the idea of going through an extreme crisis.

The "gun culture" is a real issue. But all here will deny it.

I don't deny it. I fully enjoy and embrace the "gun culture". It's been a part of my family for generations. I enjoy hunting and target shooting and the sense of preparedness that firearms give. I enjoy owning functional family heirlooms, with all their inherent monetary value, their artistic value, and their engineering craftsmanship. I enjoy honing the skill it takes to use these weapons well. I enjoy manufacturing my own ammunition for the cost savings and the satisfaction of knowing that I can.

Too bad the officers serving the warrant were not armed....wait...whoops...they were.

Which just goes to show, even when multiple people are coming to get you with guns, you can successfully resist.

Oh I know, we need guns to stop the government from overthrowing us. What a joke.

I understand that you think it is a joke. My question to you is, do you think the founders thought it was a joke? I'm asking a serious question here. I know you think it is a joke and an impossibility today, but I am genuinely curious as to whether you think it was ever possible, or if you think the founders thought it was.

For once I agree with something you said:

"The "gun culture" is a real issue."

I agree completely with what you said. I just don't agree with what you mean.

The "gun culture" IS a problem. It is still not large enough or strong enough to be unasailable by the "reasonable restrition" and "ban them" crowd (redundant I know).

A few more years of calling unreasonable restrictions "reasonable", and calls for bans on standard capacity mags, and we'll be much closer.

Keep em coming.
