CONCORD – The cat can be in the hat, but apparently guns cannot be in the Statehouse.

The state’s largest teachers union announced Monday it would not hold its annual Read Across America event at the Statehouse because guns are allowed in the building.

Citing safety concerns, the National Education Association of New Hampshire won’t allow fourth-graders to hear the works of Dr. Seuss, as read by senators and Gov. John Lynch, at the Statehouse. Instead, the union will try to arrange for state senators to visit schools in their home districts.

“The moment we learned that guns would be permitted in the (Statehouse) we began talking to our members and to parents and found that they shared our deep discomfort with NEA-NH sponsoring an event at a facility – in this case the Statehouse – that is not a gun-free zone,” the union’s President Rhonda Wesolowski wrote in a press release.

For 12 years, NEA-NH has arranged for nearly 50 fourth-graders to annually visit the Statehouse for the Read Across America event. State senators, television personalities and athletes read aloud stories by children’s author Dr. Seuss, according to the union’s spokesman, Keith McCrea.

But the union decided to cancel the event this year after lawmakers allowed the carrying of weapons in the Statehouse.

never in a million years would I want my children in a building where people are aloud to carry weapons.

It's getting very creepy when people think this is the new norm.
The parents along with the teachers were not comfortable with the situation, I for one can't blame them.

EVERY SINGLE DAY you children are around lawfully carried firearms.

Also I apologize for not being clear.

40 (likely 41 this year) states have "shall issue" or "may issue" laws.
Another 8 states have "may issue" laws including MA which are not equal protection under the law.
Only IL and WI completely ban conceal carry.
WI currently allows open carry (weapon visible) instead and a bill to allow conceal carry looks likely to pass this year.

I posted 41 without thinking because I consider that 8 states with "may infringe" laws to be part of the problem.

Still you pass lawfully armed citizens every single day.

just as I have every right to support shall issue concealed carry. I live in Florida where it is fairly common.

Currently this report covers a time span of 23 years from October 1, 1987 - December 31, 2010. During that period of time, Florida issued 1,902,769 concealed weapons permits and currently 780,595 are valid. Only 168 licenses have been revoked for the use of a firearm in a crime after the license had been issued.
