NY lawmaker touched by gun violence presses on
http://online.wsj.com/article/AP3d9630f174c74776a629bca996ce361f.html

Out of nowhere, a deranged gunman shoots into a crowd of innocent victims, firing until bystanders tackle him as he tries to load a new clip of ammo. Six people are killed and several injured; one person suffers a head wound but survives to face a long period of rehabilitation.

That shooting on a Long Island Rail Road train in 1993 inspired Carolyn McCarthy, who lost her husband and saw her son paralyzed, to run for Congress. And the more recent shooting at an Arizona shopping center with which it shares eerie similarities has thrust her back into the spotlight as she seeks to outlaw the high-capacity magazines believed to have helped both gunmen.

McCarthy has been doing this for so long that she answers the Second Amendment question on gun ownership before it is asked.

"Many people are saying, 'Oh, you're taking away our rights to own a gun,'" McCarthy said. "This has nothing to do with taking away the right of someone owning a gun. The Supreme Court already came out and said everybody has a right to own a gun. The large-capacity clips, though, should only be for our police officers and our military."

<more>

She has it right - large capacity magazines have no place in a civil society.

yup

but she can save other mothers and wives from the same fate.

21. The gun killed the husband all by itself?
Or are you leaving out another case of another mentally deranged individual who got access to a gun. Where's the demand for better mental health services and a demand for inclusion of people treated with any psychogenic drugs being at least temporarily placed on the NICS no buy list.

At least then you';d be doing something that makes sense.

But constantly wording things as if the evil gun, all by itself, killed her husband and wounded her son just makes you sound dumb.

Everyone is sorry she suffered such a tragic loss, but that does not give her any special standing on the gun control issue. If you're wrong, you're wrong - period and a crappy bill shouldn't pass just because Carolyn McCarthy sponsored it.

I have a question for you:

If large capacity magazines are suitable for the protection of the lives of police officers, why should they not also be suitable for the protection of the lives of civilians?

20. Large capacity magazines....
what about at a shooting range so that one needn't spend time on the firing line re-loading?

I've always found it preferable to show up at the range, with all magazines loaded. Makes it much more convenient; and since I've got my attention focused on what's actually taking place, instead of having my head down and unaware while engaged in reloading the magazines it's safer as well.

Less than 24 hours after the shooting in Arizona, she's blabbing to anyone in the media that would listen about how she's gonna save the world. Oh, and her own tragic experience dictates that the rest of the country should bow down?

NO.

edit: my sincere apologies if this post was insulting to any legitimate whores.

29. I won't quite go that far. She is projecting her concerns on to the rest of us
She probably has good intentions but in her fixation, can not see the damage she does.

There was another mother who used to do about the same thing. Her only son died in the stock broker office shoot up in SFO. Eventually she gave it up and basically retired. Very nice lady overwhelmed by her loss. It defined her life afterward.

The shooting occurred Saturday, she probably made the phone calls to MSM that evening. Holding a press conference 24 hours after the shooting on Sunday is/was as distasteful as it gets.

35. "Large capacity magazines have no place in a civil society" except in the hands of police, right?
Edited on Wed Feb-16-11 04:06 AM by Euromutt
"Large-capacity" magazines have no purpose except for mowing down large numbers of innocents, which is why we need to outlaw them, except for the police. After all, the police have a legitimate need to mow down large numbers of innocents from time to time, don't they?

Oh no, wait, sorry; the police get to keep their "large-capacity" magazines because they're properly trained. In spite of this training, however, we can't expect them to hit the target with the eleven rounds available to them before they'd need to reload, which is why they need "large-capacity" magazines.

No, sorry. No matter how I try to accept the rationalizations, all the arguments against "large-capacity" magazines--and for that matter, so-called "assault weapons"--lose credibility the moment an exemption is made for law enforcement.

And the military has murdered well over a million civilians in the last decade.
