(Student) Senate recommends not passing gun bill (that would allow CW on campus - FL)

In a Student Government Association Senate meeting on Feb. 11, members passed a recommendation to condemn a bill before the Florida Legislature that would allow people with concealed weapons permits to carry guns on colleges and universities.

Florida Senate Bill 234 was filed on Dec. 12, 2010 by Sen. Greg Evers, R-Crestview, to amend Florida Statute 790.06, removing statutory language prohibiting the carrying of concealed weapons or firearms on campus grounds.

The recommendation reads, in part: "The Student Government Association of the University of West Florida condemns Senate Bill 234 by Senator Greg Evers, strongly encourages the Florida Senate to reject this bill as it stands, and, should it pass, urges Gov. Rick Scott to veto the bill for the safety of the Florida State University System."

The recommendation sparked rigorous debate among the senators and students in attendance. SGA President Josh Finley began the debate with an opening statement, saying that Florida International University and the University of Florida student senates recently had passed similar recommendations.

1. Who cares what student senates think, I'd rather see an on campus vote
On the issue.

2. Student Senates are pretty useless things, but it's shocking how much money they control
If nothing else, it's an early lesson on the power of patronage and back-room dealing...

4. That would be too democratic, and might not provide the "right" results
UWF is in the Florida Panhandle, after all. It's a pretty conservative area.

14. Everyone one I've known is chock-full of self-important busybodies.
And I've dealt with a few, both in Florida and Massachusetts.

Sort of like a certain fallen-on-hard-times political movement we're all very familiar with....

You're funny.

Edit to add for those who are here to have a real conversation: Private universities are free to put into place whatever restrictions they see fit. If you don't like it, don't attend/use their resources.

9. That policy worked so well for VT and NIU didn't it?
Same policy they had. It stopped any threat to students on those campuses - no, wait. Never mind.

Another example of a "brilliant" idea based on way too many visits to Fantasyland and no grasp of reality.

10. But you forgot...
Guns off campus man - only campus law enforcement should carry firearms

But you forgot criminals who ignore such laws. They, too, will carry firearms on campus, regardless of any rules to the contrary.

The rules didn't stop Cho, or Bishop. They only stop good people.
