Negroes with Guns
"First published in 1962, "Negroes with Guns" is the story of a southern black community's struggle to arm itself in self-defense against the Ku Klux Klan and other racist groups. Frustrated and angered by violence condoned or abetted by the local authorities against blacks, the small community of Monroe, North Carolina, brought the issue of armed self-defense to the forefront of the civil rights movement. The single most important intellectual influence on Huey P. Newton, the founder of the Black Panther Party, "Negroes with Guns" is a classic story of a man who risked his life for democracy and freedom."

2. ah yes
This Robert Williams who wrote a book called Negroes With Guns -- he's not at all related to the Robert Williams who is the subject of the documentary film Negroes With Guns. Nooo ... it's just a bizarre coincidence. And it's entirely coincidental that a thread about the book by Robert Williams called Negroes With Guns should appear within, what, a couple of hours? of a thread about the documentary film about Robert Williams called Negroes With Guns.

For pity's sake. How much of a thrill do some people (somewhere in the world ...) get from typing the words "Negroes With Guns"? (One just doesn't get a lot of opportunities to use the word "Negroes" these days, does one?)

Other than bizarre coincidence, and that possibility, what reason can there be for this proliferation of threads called "Negroes With Guns" hereabouts? I mean, obviously they're not ABOUT THE SAME THING.

The single most important intellectual influence on Huey P. Newton, the founder of the Black Panther Party, Negroes with Guns is a classic story of a man who risked his life for democracy and freedom.
Now, hands up everybody who agrees with the political philosophy of Huey P. Newton ... or has a clue what it was ... . How about: hands up anybody who lives by it, or does anything at all to advance the struggle of African-Americans "for democracy and freedom".

And then, hands up anybody who is exploiting the struggle of African-Americans "for democracy and freedom" to advance their own interests ... .

How about: hands up anybody who would shoot an African-American (or is that Negro?) youth who broke into his/her home?

I surely do hope that nobody who put his/her hand up for that last one had the gall *not* to put his/her hand up for the one right before it.

.
