It's been a year, and despite all the wailing and pearl-clutching from the prohibitionists a year ago, nothing has changed.


Starbuck's has yet to change their stated position on guns one iota, and there have been no shootouts over the cocoa powder shakers

and the extra-long straws.


So the prohis get a -2, for lack of both predictive and political powers.

6. It may be pricey, but *over*priced?

For starters, Starbucks pays its growers--i.e. coffee farmers in places like Guatemala, Ethiopia and Indonesia--on average 23% over market price. Starbucks also provides comprehensive health insurance (and stock options) for all its employees who work 20 hours a week or more; even with the markup on what it pays its growers, five years ago, Starbucks was spending more on health coverage than on coffee beans.

Starbucks also contributes to a variety of charitable causes, such as Product (RED), which is a brand attached to certain products of which the proceeds go to the Global Fund to fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria. As of last month, (RED) had raised $160 million.

So a large chunk of what you're paying for is allowing the company to treat its suppliers and employees decently, and support the more vulnerable both in America and abroad. Yes, that costs money, and that cost is passed to the consumer. If you can't afford to contribute to that by buying expensive coffee, that's understandable, but it's rather unfair to dismiss Starbucks' prices as "a great big ripoff."

Beer either. They are just too bitter for my taste. I'd rather have a milk shake.

I never understood beer. It's too weak for you to easily get drunk, and it doesn't taste good. If I'm drinking recreationally, wine is better tasting and has beneficial side-effects--if I'm drinking to get a buzz, vodka is far more efficient.

Late at night I would often stop at a Dunkin Donuts shop if I noticed a couple of police cars parked outside. Nothing discourages bad guys faster than armed people.

I believe this unusual 'phenomena' only happens when the media is called, for the most part. Except maybe at a few in areas where Sarah Palin is considered a 'saint.'

And started the 90% story right back up again like pushing a button . Uncle Fester got 24 hour coverage for shooting an instant rock star " and others " in Phoenix , and very few have yet heard of the new sport of gunwalking .

I wouldnt call it a victory yet , but that is no small feat .
