Gun owner charged - shooting at school by 6 year old
Authorities investigating a 6-year-old boy who fired a gun in the cafeteria at Ross Elementary School injuring himself and two other children have filed charges today against a 30-year-old man for making a firearm accessible to a child.

The boy and his mother were spending the night at the Houston home of Wrolandrea Java Hensley the night before the April 19 shooting, according to court documents.

Hensley told police that he left the .380 caliber semi-automatic gun under a futon cushion in an upstairs room about 10 days before the boy said he found it on the floor and took it to school, according to the criminal charge.

Police said the child was attempting to pull back the slide mechanism on the pistol during lunch when it discharged. The bullet round that hit the floor bounced up at a low trajectory, injuring the boy and two other students with bullet fragments, investigators said.

Good. Lock the idiot up and never let him own another gun. Also good info that it wasn't the kid dropping the gun - as in previous stories - that caused it to fire.

1. Don't just lock the kid up,
lock who ever owns the gun up as well, because they are not responsible enough to own a gun, if they allowed it to be in a place that this kid could get his hands on it.

2. Also, please. Close down whomever sold and manufactured (or imported) the gun and ammo.

3. I wouldn't go that far but
we need to get guns out of the hands of people who are not responsible enough to control them.

31. I assume you're talking about Conrad Black.
He was longer involved with the Hollinger group when they sold the Telegraph in 2004, five years before this article appeared. No points for the ad hominem.

Here's some hard data, as well as some more "reputable" sources on UK crime. It's not the paradise of your fevered imagination.

26. Their crime rates did not go down. Before 1977, one could
argue that Canada had laxer gun laws in many ways than us. Also, did you know that in Canada a felon may legally own a gun after five years, and 12 year olds can legally buy ammunition? The commonwealth has a couple of differences from us. One is that we embraced the enlightenment, they did not. We have a greater gap between rich and poor. Those are for starters. Canada also has a kind of vibrant gun culture.
Adding Japan shows a very simplistic view of things. For starters, Japan is a soft police state. Their "bill of rights" only exist in theory.

5. They can do that in Nigeria whenever they want but not in a free country
nigeria also is gun-free and ammo-free so it's your gun free paradise.

8. It would make more sense to require futon makers to include a conspicuous warning
on each futon pad: "NOT A FIREARM STORAGE DEVICE! Don't put your gun in here."

13. Good point. And then we'd hear demands that all futons must be
firearms approved, even if not used that way (just in case and for the children, dontchaknow), and it would start costing a small fortune to furnish the spare bedroom... ;)

14. Well!!!
I'm appalled!!! How could anyone put the cost of furnishing a room over futon/firearm safety???
The nerve!

I dare say a web-enable futon should be required in neighborhoods where childbearing permits have been issued within the last 16 years.
That way neighbors could be sure which houses to warn the youngsters away from.

...all the local papers where those evil shops advertise.
For that matter put the utility companies out of business that sell them electricity.
INDICT the officials that granted them a license...

Damn, where is that sarcasm thing? Whatever, you get the point.

Edited on Tue May-17-11 10:12 PM by Straw Man
I must have missed that one.

I think you're confused: you're conflating a denial of rights and a call for rights.

And cast Pacifism Level X.

There is peace on earth, we can get rid of the 2nd A now.

That's about the only realistic scenario in which your belief on the sanctity of life would be viable, when no one ever attempts to violate it.

33. The Power.
That power does not belong to ANY of us.

The problem is that in defining "us," you routinely exempt the organs of state security, to whom you would grant the power of deadly force unrestricted by rule of law.

Not my concept of liberal democracy, exactly...

Your call for rights is actually the call to extinguish the rights of those who get shot and killed.

There is no Constitutional right to murder. I have no desire to "extinguish" anyone's rights, and you can keep your vile accusations to yourself.
