Ohio gun-sale laws easily circumvented
http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/local_news/stories/2011/05/30/ohio-gun-sale-laws-easily-circumvented.html?sid=101

When Rasi Robinson was arrested with a gun in 1999, he told Washington, D.C., police he probably would get more guns once that case was over.

He kept his word. Robinson is now serving time for gun trafficking and manslaughter.

<snip>

Wayne L. Dixie Jr., assistant special agent in charge of the Columbus field division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, explained how it's done.

"An individual who has a criminal history who legally can't purchase firearms, he or she then goes and gets a number of individuals who have clean criminal histories or no criminal history at all and has them straw purchase firearms," Dixie said. "I've had cases myself where, for example, they paid a college student 25 bucks."

1. Not exactly
two questions: Who is stupid enough to risk mandatory five year sentence for 25 bucks? The buyer is committing a federal crime, I would not call that "law abiders"

4. Straw purchasers are not "law abiders."
They are criminals who haven't been caught yet. It's a federal offense.

You can call it "circumventing" the law; I call it "breaking" it. News flash: Criminals Break Laws.

5. Another example of shitty journalism...
NOTHING WAS CIRCUMVENTED... If there was some sort of magical circumvention or a blindingly large loophole, then no one would have been arrested.

1. It is illegal to be a straw purchaser. This law applies to every corner of the nation. It is homogenous. It could be enforced in any jurisdiction in the country by any Federal law enforcement officer.

2. According to the article: "All four women eventually pleaded guilty." if there was circumvention, WTF did they plea guilty to?

6. A question jpak does not ask:
Why does the government choose to not prosecute the straw purchasers?

8. You realize no law were being "circumvented"... right? What they did was STILL illegal.
Breaking different laws is not the same as circumventing others.

That's like saying you circumvented laws preventing theft of gas from gas stations by siphoning it out of cars in the supermarket parking lot.
