Officials find house full of guns in Grand Terrace, right next to day care

GRAND TERRACE, Calif. (KABC) -- San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies discovered a house filled with heavy weapons right next door to a day care center.

The house is located on the 22500 block of Pico Street in Grand Terrace. Officials said a 57-year-old man living there is in custody and is expected to be booked on attempted murder charges.

Investigators said he became irritated with a man who was picking up his grandchild from the day care center next door.

A fight broke out and the suspect was allegedly subdued before he could pull the trigger of his gun.

typical individual firearms. Had the man not tried to harm deputies, he'd probably be in no real trouble.

"Heavy weapons" implies something more than semi-auto rifles, pistols, and shotguns. All the ones I saw looked pretty legal, although California laws on "assault" rifles can be tricky.

17. "Heavy weapons" means artillery and armored fighting vehicles

The minimum for a "heavy weapon" is something in the order of a 4.2" or 120mm mortar, a 75mm howitzer or an armored personnel carrier.

Crew-served weapons like medium machine guns, heavy machine guns, and 60-82mm mortars, and manportable rocket and missile launchers are typically classed as "light weapons."

What this guy had were "small arms."

So we're not talking an established outfit like a Kindercare or La Petite Academy, but rather, a day care run out of a private residence in a residential neighborhood. In this case, said day care was next to another private residence inhabited by someone who owned a gun collection. So what? Are you suggesting that we prohibit people from performing perfectly legal activities on their own property because someone opened a day care next door?

Insofar as we can detect a problem here, it's in the resident getting into a fight with a customer of the day care and pulling a gun in the process. The number of guns he kept in the house are irrelevant to that; what matters is that he had one handgun on his person.

There's also little information about the actual altercation. Given that we're talking about a day care in a private residence, rather than in a purpose-built building, I think it's highly likely it had something to do with the customer bothering the neighbor, such as parking blocking the neighbor's driveway. Yes, I know that's nothing to pull a gun over, but we don't know how the argument developed up to the point the neighbor tried to pull the gun.
