Mexican police chief champions the right to arms
Ramon Almonte, the Guerrero state police chief, said on Monday he will ask the federal congress to make it easier for common citizens to get permits for weapons to defend themselves.

Almonte's brother was killed on Jan. 1 in a rural town in Guerrero by unidentified gunmen. The state has been plagued by such executions.

"When you fight someone and at least you have a 'piece,' the person who is attacking you might think twice," Almonte said. "We cannot go on the way we are."

...

"Having a weapon should be a right, because the bad guys are few and we, the good guys, are many, so we can't allow ourselves to be held hostage by the few," Almonte said.

Welcome to the post Enlightenment world, Chief. That last sentence is just common sense once you overcome the Distortion Field. I wish him and Mexico well in the struggle for freedom.

Everyone knows all police chiefs oppose private ownership of firearms.

3. Only police chiefs...
...who don't run the risk of being murdered themselves.

5. It seems to me that all police chiefs are at risk of murder, especially in Mexico.

In America, all police can carry nationwide. In nominally American places like New York and Chicago, powerful politicians' families and mistresses can get special police protection, carry, or both.

The problem isn't that chiefs can be murdered, it's that they, unlike lesser citizens, can have the tools and resources--often at taxpayer expense--for defense while the people who pay their salaries are left to hope and pray for the best.

I have no idea what police chiefs can do outside their jurisdictions in Mexico, but it's might be hard to extend the umbrella of privilege over one's brother when he's out of your area. The brother's death appears to be the real motivation in this story.

In any event, I commend the chief for also thinking about people who don't sleep with him and who aren't members of his immediate family.

4. Obviously he is admitting that gun control is a total failure in Mexico ...
and that allowing honest citizens to be armed may actually improve the situation.

Smart man.

9. Thats good of him and all..
However the chief problem in Mexico isn't guns. It is asinine American drug laws. With the Cartels out of business the chief American export to Mexico could be firearms and the Mexican people would be much safer.
