***ALERT*** Brady Campaign's Law Firm Also Representing Pediatricians (And Physicans)
Saturday, June 04, 2011

DATE: June 3, 2011
TO: USF & NRA Members and Friends
FROM: Marion P. Hammer
USF Executive Director
NRA Past President

There's an old saying, "Birds of a feather flock together" and that certainly confirms that the attack on gun rights by pediatricians and doctors in Florida is blatant gun control politics.

We thought you should know what the lawsuit threat from pediatricians is really about.....

Ropes & Gray, the law firm that has represented the "Brady Campaign," the nation's largest anti-gun/gun ban organization in lawsuits, is also representing pediatricians and threatening a lawsuit to usurp the privacy rights and gun rights of patients in Florida. Click here to see the law firm connection.

The Brady Campaign's Washington-based law firm of Ropes & Gray is now representing the Florida chapters of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American College of Physicians. Click here to see read the Palm Beach Post article about the pending lawsuit.

Last week, in a brazen attempt to intimidate and coerce Governor Scott into vetoing HB 155 -- Privacy of Firearm Owners, lawyers from that firm representing those physicians groups, sent a threatening letter to Governor Scott.

The letter signed by the lawyers on behalf of the pediatricians said "...we intend to file a lawsuit against you and other state officials in the event that this legislation becomes law." Click here to see the threatening letter to the Governor printed in the Orlando Sentinel.

GOVERNOR SCOTT SIGNED THE HB 155 on June 2!

House Bill 155 will keep politics out of examination rooms.

Now we know why docs want to ask about guns in the home.

1. Doctors' forms have asked about household guns for a long time before James Brady was shot.
Doctors will stop at anything, even time travel, to destroy America.

2. I've seen nothing in the legislation that would keep a doctor from asking...
"Would you like any information on gun safety in the home?".

No doctor has a right to know what inanimate objects I own, or to refuse me service if I do not tell him.

3. Exactly. No more than a pharmacist should ask if someone's married before dispensing birth control.
They're there to provide a service, not to try and push a worldview on their clients.

5. So this year my doc asked a few questions
I am "of a certain age" and he hauled out a checklist and told me that it had been requested he ask people my age the following questions. I did not HAVE to answer, if I didn't want to. If I didn't, the worst to happen would be that I would be asked again at my next appointment. The queries asked if I had smoke and carbon dioxide alarms and if I had any bath or toilet assistance bars in my home.

Were those an invasion of my geezer freedoms? I thought they were a good way for my doc to look out for my best interests, and so answered the questions. Maybe they were a result of new Medicare procedures -- I don't know. But I did not feel infringed upon.

So why are other safety issues not a medical concern after an incident has landed a patient in medical trouble, be they a child or adult?

6. "So why are other safety issues not a medical concern" because when told
I don't want to answer that question the pediatrician told the mother of the child to find another doctor. This is about patient's rights and privacy. How would you feel if when you told your doctor you did not want to answer that question the doctor told you to find another doctor? Granted that is not what happened in your case but such has happened with the gun question.

9. If they demanded you give them an answer, and they refuse you service if you give the "wrong" one...
Then yes, it would sure as hell be an invasion of your privacy. It's also a massive breach of medical ethics.

8. Next they should work on a bill to protect gun owners against discrimination in the workplace and
or institute of higher learning.
