Arianna Huffington takes aim at W&NRA:"Lawyers, Guns And Money"
Lawyers, Guns And Money

By Arianna Huffington, AlterNet
March 3, 2004

Mel Gibson's screenwriting partner the Good Lord thought "Thou shall not kill" was important enough to qualify for his Top 10 list. If he'd had a little more room on those tablets, he might have added: ". . . and, while you're at it, thou shall not grant immunity to those who help to arm killers."

-----------------------further down, Arianna nails the NRA apologists=====================

Bush continues to campaign like a moderate and govern like an extremist. If the Democratic nominee is smart, he'll pull out the big guns and lay waste to Karl Rove's attempts to present the president as our great protector. In truth, homicides and violent crimes are on the rise for the first time in nearly a decade. That's right: Crime has gone up on George Bush's watch.

I can hear the TV spot now: "Are you safer today than you were four years ago?" It's an armor-piercing, election-year issue – one that could score a bull's-eye directly in W's most vulnerable area.

1. Do a search on the Chicago Tribune
home page. About two weeks ago they ran an excellent article on how the overwhelming number of murders in Chicago are gang related. I like to know how the "gun industry" is to blame for that, and secondly how would you combat the gang problem that is responsible for those murders?

2. 57% of gun crime is caused by guns sold by 1% of the gun dealers
That's what the article said.

4. Did the actual gang bangers
buy their guns at these gun dealers?

11. And the Chimp's answer to the problem
was to give those dealers immunity for responsibility for their criminal actions.....which the Democrats blocked.

15. 57% of guns sold by 1% of dealers...
...and the article also mentions that that included the sniper killings as well as 52 other crimes. I must say that that is one hell of a sample they got there. What did they do for this "analysis?" Check every crime that happened within a 2 block radius of this place or something?

It'd be really nice to know HOW people come up with stats before claiming that they are fact...especially because this one sounds ridiculous!!

It's not like there's been a lack of threads on those studies...or a lack of silly objections from the RKBA crowd.

3. Uhhh, don't you think that article is a just a tad biased?
The only word (well, not the only one), missing from her screed was "pantload".

5. Never thought I'd see the day someone on DU would say Arianna
is biased. The ironic thing is that in CaliGubernatorial race, the winning RepuKKKe, Democrats Gray Davis and Cruz Bustamante, Independent Arianna and Green Camejo all had the same views on gun regulation. Who's really out of the mainstream?

6. CA is out of the mainstream!
Only DC, MY, and NJ can compete with their insanely backwards gun laws. AND THAT's NO PANTLOAD!

16. Maybe there's something wrong with my Web browser
But I can't find any mention of Larry Craig in that thread, or anyone using the word "evil" to describe any Democrat.

:freak:

17. Maybe it's just me then?
I don't know what would lead me to believe that Huffingtons article was
biased.

"and, while you're at it, thou shall not grant immunity to those who help to arm killers".

"backing a deeply immoral new bill".

"the staggeringly irresponsible bill should more accurately be called the "Get Away with Murder Act".

"loophole that allows unlicensed gun dealers to sell their deadly weapons".

"But when gun control advocates in the Senate moved to add these measures to the Murder Inc. bill".

"hey will also set up a nice gun show to sell you the Uzis and TEC-9s with which to mow us down".

"It's an armor-piercing, election-year issue".

"Who's really out of the mainstream?"

For starters? How about California? Or maybe it's just California legislators and politicians?

19. jeepers creepers
Can somebody find for us an example of an UNBIASED OPINION PIECE please?? Quick, now, I've always wanted to see one o' them, and the suspense is killing me.

Of course, the whining is also deafening me, and I assume it might stop if someone can pull one of those out of his/her hat and thus actually make a point ...

Of course, bear in mind that some folks here keep trying to pass off Newsmax, the Washington Times, and CNS as "unbiased news sources".

with fat and calories. The children have no power to resist due to the cupcake industry's evil marketing schemes.
