Plaxico Burress to Work with Anti-Gun Group
Edited on Mon Jun-13-11 04:55 PM by rl6214
It would not be a normal day if I did not write about Plaxico Burress at least once.

So here goes.

Mr. Burress, who was just last week released from prison after being charged with carrying a concealed weapon in a New York City nightclub, is now partnering with an anti-gun group.

Which is fitting. Since Burress accidentally shot himself in the leg with the concealed pistol he was carrying. I would be anti-gun if someone shot me, too.

"rl6214? eom"

Why would you think I don't think smart people should have guns either? Did you even read the entire sentence or was your post an attempted insult towards me referenced in the first part of the post.

The entire post:

who cannot be trusted with a gun, who thinks that smart people shouldn't have them, either.

So let's break this down:

Just another stupid individual who cannot be trusted with a gun, who thinks that smart people shouldn't have them either.

Now this entire statement is directed towards Burress but does kolesar think I am

A)Just another stupid individual
B)Just another stupid individual who cannot be trusted with a gun
C)thinks that smart people shouldn't have them either
D)all of the above

My guess is that it is an attempted insult and would go with A

Personally, I think any other form of public service would be smarter than reminding everyone every day that you shot yourself in your own darn leg. Actually, I really like to see him (or any of these out-of-jail athletes) step up to bat for ex-offenders, prison reform, or families of the incarcerated. Plaxico on a Get on the Bus fundraiser would be a lot more socially valuable than Plaxico at a Brady fundraiser...

Between the idiots we now have embracing the old Bush/Cheney terrah lists, to this numbnuts (literally and figuratively) I swear, if Charlie Manson came out and did a Gun Control PSA we'd hear all about how thoughtful he was and how he's learned an important lesson.

Burress is about as good a spokesperson for gun control as Michael Vick is for Animal Welfare. Their only motivation is how long do they have to do this to get their old job and salary back.

34. Statistically seniors are less likely to be victims of street crime ..
than other age brackets but that is because they are not out on the street as much as younger people and generally do not stay out as late. However, they may be a tempting target to a predator when they are out.

Safety and Security

Are they more vulnerable to street crimes?

Seniors fall into three categories, based on age: "junior" seniors, "intermediate" seniors and "senior" seniors.
Many seniors are very afraid of crime when they're out, but they are actually statistically less likely to be victims of random street crime than anyone.
This is because they're just not out of the house as often as younger people. When they do venture out, because many have given up driving, they're less likely to stay out late. Additionally, seniors (particularly the "senior" seniors) tend to travel in groups.

5 Top Self Defense Techniques for Seniors and the Elderly

Seniors need to be prepared with self defense products and techniques. Often, olden women and men may be viewed as vulnerable and may be easy targets for attackers, who may mistake them for being frail or defenseless. Imagine their surprise when the senior citizen effectively fights back and prevents or stops the attack! Obviously, the ideal situation is that seniors will not be walking alone or find themselves in potentially dangerous situations, but there will inevitably be times when it does occur. Here are five tips to help seniors better protect themselves:

Situational Awareness
January 23, 2011

***snip***

I choose you!
Criminals don’t just choose their victims at random. From the mugger in the street to the guy who starts on you in a bar, it is not random and it’s not about being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The reason you have been chosen is because you have been identified as an easy target. In Lawrence Kane and Kris Wilder’s book called, ‘The Little Black Book of Violence’, they say, “Muggers, thugs, robbers, bullies, gang bangers and rapists all have one thing in common: They are happy to dish out pain, but are quite reluctant to be on the receiving end of it. Consequently, before a bad guy tees off on you, he will evaluate his odds of success.”

The distance interview
To evaluate their chances they will conduct a form of interview, where a criminal will basically ascertain whether you meet the criteria to be their next victim. These types of interviews are conducted in a variety of ways. The first type is the distance interview, where you probably won’t have a clue that someone is watching and assessing your suitability for a crime. At a distance a criminal is looking at some of the following things:

How you present yourself, how confident are you?
Are you aware of your surroundings – are you distracted by your mobile phone or are you rooting through the contents of your bag?
Have you got headphones on?
What you are carrying and wearing?
Do you look lost or like a tourist?
Is there anything they can exploit like a limp that will slow your escape or a ponytail that they can grab?
http://selfdefenceblog.com/2011/01/23/situational-awareness/

The difference between you and I is that you feel that anyone who carries a legally concealed firearm shows signs of excessive fear or paranoia and should seek treatment. I feel that such a person is a rational individual who has a clean criminal record and statistically presents little or no threat to society and who simply wants to be prepared with the most effective tool for self defense in case he ever finds himself in a situation where his health or life is threatened by some fool who makes the mistake of attacking him.

about avoiding situations. I do not believe Democrats should be promoting more guns. Apparently, you do.

And, "I are an older person" -- who doesn't pack, just like most older people. There are plenty of other ways to avoid situations and, in the highly unlikely event one occurs, handle it. You too could learn from your elders.

Since you have yet to offer in any way, shape, or form, self-protection advice beyond "be aware of your surroundings",

what advice would you offer for use when positive thinking fails to protect someone?

I note that if I (or anyone else) should, in extremis, stab someone to death in self-defense- well, that person

would be just as dead as if they were shot to death in self-defense.

I daresay the same holds true in Hoytville, whatever your feelings may be on the matter....

24. Why is it a bad habit for me to carry concealed ...
I've done so for at least 15 years and I have never had to use my weapon nor have I intimidated anyone with it. Not one single person that I don't personally know has ever suspected that I was carrying a concealed firearm.

I doubt if I will ever have a reason to use my concealed snub nosed revolver in legitimate self defense but I see no reason why I should stop carrying it tomorrow. I invested the time and money to get a concealed carry permit and it's entirely legal for me to carry a concealed firearm in most places in my state with this permit.

The local police know I carry concealed because an officer roomed with us for well over a year. They have no problems with my carrying my firearm or for that matter they don't worry about the other 819,135 people who also have concealed weapons permits issued by the state of Florida.

I carefully reflected on my decision to get a carry permit before I applied for one. I know myself and my strengths and weaknesses. I don't consider myself a vigilante or have fantasies of being a Dirty Harry. I merely want a fair chance if I am ever confronted by some fool who intends to seriously injure or kill me. I don't fear that this will happen nor do I fear criminals and muggers, but I am not superman and if attacked by someone who is much larger than I am or in better physical condition or an individual armed with a knife or a gun, I realize that I would be at a severe disadvantage. I'm 65 years old and have a handicapped tag to hang on my car's rear view mirror as I have a bad hip and back problem that limits me physically. My limp may make me a more tempting target than I was when I was much younger. Predators usually attack the weakest of the herd.

But even when I was younger without the problems that age brought, even though I had training in self defense, I realized that my instructor was right when he said that if his students were attacked by an individual armed with a gun they were at a serious disadvantage. We learned techniques to disarm such an individual but the odds of success decreased the further the individual was from you. Plus no matter how good you are at the martial arts, multiple attackers can overcome you. They don't come at you one at a time like in the movies. When concealed carry became legal in my state I decided to obtain a license. At the time, I lived in a dangerous neighborhood.

Now I live in a much less dangerous neighborhood and have little reason to carry but it is a habit and in my opinion it is NOT a bad habit. Shit sometimes happens and I would feel like a total fool if the one time that a concealed weapon could have saved my life or health the life or health of someone I love was when I had left my trusty snub nosed revolver in its gun safe at home.

My issue is not so much with packers like you, it's those who are not so reasonable or who are so totally obsessed with guns that their house resembles a armory. The later group is just polluting society with more guns that we will have to deal with down the road.

You guys can think all gun toters are like you -- but they aren't.

I actually enjoyed reading your post. But, there are a lot of gun toters who don't carry for the same reasons.

35. It's been ten years since I was the meat in a car sandwich ...
but I still wear seat belts.

My personal experience with people who have concealed weapons permits is far more positive than yours. Perhaps that is because almost all of the people I have known who had a carry permit and made a habit of carrying a firearm were shooters with years of experience and a high percentage were ex police or military. Many were in my age bracket and most were in their forties or older. If you can pass a criminal background check at that age, you are very unlikely to be a threat to society.

But obviously I can know only a limited number of individuals who have carry permits so why do I feel that my positive view of those who have carry permits is accurate and not merely an faulty opinion based on a small statistical sampling?

I can consult far better statistical data such as the Concealed Weapon / Firearm Summary Report which Florida publishes on a monthly basis. This report currently covers a long time frame from October 1, 1987 to May 31, 2011. During this period of time the state of Florida has issued 1,992,296 concealed weapons permits of which 819,135 are currently valid. Florida has revoked only 168 licenses because the bearer committed a crime involving a firearm after the license was issued. Not all of those crimes involved a shooting or even the use of the weapon for a violent crime, many were infractions of the law when the bearer brought his weapon into a prohibited area. The report can be viewed at http://licgweb.doacs.state.fl.us/stats/cw_monthly.html

You may know some people who have carry licenses who impress you as dangerous or unstable, but your experiences with a few does not mean that a large percentage of those who legally carry have similar personality traits.

I don't know how many firearms a person would have to own to be considered to have an armory, but many of the people I know with carry permits have an extensive collection of firearms. It's not at all unusual for a person who enjoys shooting to have a large number of firearms collected over a number of years, just as it's not unusual to find a person who loves do it yourself home repair to have a work shop filled with tools many of which he rarely uses.

36. "My issue is not so much with packers like you"
Yet you still have to try to be insulting:

"yet you still can't leave home w/o one"

"My issue is not so much with packers like you, it's those who are not so reasonable or who are so totally obsessed with guns that their house resembles a armory"

You have no clue why people have firearms. I collect WW2 weapons and I own firearms from each of the major players with the exception of Japan. I also have 3 sons so I plan on passing them on to my boys when I am gone. They are also a great investment. They do not go down in price, they only go up. Each of my WW2 rifles have doubled, tripled or even quadrupled in value since I bought them, all within the past 10 years. What investment have you made that has that type of return. I have never heard of any of these WW2 rifles EVER being used in a crime. They are collectable pieces.
