Police Lose Automatic Rifle While Driving Between Calls

Springs Officer Believes AR-15 Fell Out Of Trunk

The Colorado Springs Police Department is looking for help to find a semi-automatic weapon that fell out of the back of a police cruiser Tuesday evening.

The AR-15 rifle (pictured, left) was loaded and a total of four ammunition magazines were in its carrying case, police said.

Police believe that the rifle, which was in a black case approximately 3.5 feet by 1 foot by 6 inches, fell out of the trunk of a patrol car when an officer was traveling between two locations. The trunk lid somehow became open when the officer was driving, police said.

Quite a sensational headline. Especially when you notice in the body of the report the ar-15 is clearly referred to as a 'semi-automatic weapon'.

OF course this is not the first time police have lost weapons while driving around. I recall a similiar situation in Lousiana (I think, am not real sure) where a Police officer left a MP-5 (which is a full-auto sub-machine gun) on top of his trunk and drove off.

The headline could have said "Police Lose Assault Weapon" and been perfectly correct.

Trained police officers using a registered firearm and its lost. There may even be licensing in there somewhere.

I thought this stuff was the anti gunners next cure all to this kind of stuff.
