Guns Allowed On School Grounds? Cleveland County Lawmakers Vote Yes
SHELBY N.C. -- Parents and teachers with concealed handgun permits could legally bring their guns to school under a bill that Cleveland County lawmakers supported in the state House last week.

A measure to loosen gun restrictions in the Tar Heel State would allow concealed carry permit-holders to have their handguns on school grounds if the firearms are kept inside a closed compartment or container within a locked car. Reps. Tim Moore, Kelly Hastings and Mike Hager voted for the bill, which won approval in the House June 7 and is slated for committee hearings in the state Senate.

“If you’re going to pick your child up at school and you’re otherwise a law-abiding citizen and have no criminal intent, you should not be charged as a felon just because you’re exercising your Second Amendment right,” said Hastings, a primary sponsor of House Bill 650.

One more state getting in line with the rest of the country.

I rest my case.

Man brought gun to kid's party because his children didn't get any cake

5. A single data point is not a trend.
My seat-of-the-pants guess is that the man you refer to likely has a criminal history and is not a legal gun owner. I could be wrong. Not really enough info to go by, but in my experience, legal CCW carriers don't behave that way.

7. A solitary instance is one too many times when it comes to safety of children.

8. So, what other risks will you apply that philosophy too?
And will you ignore the lives saved, on the other side of the equation?

11. Absolutely -
I am going to file a petition to remove playground equipment from city parks. We must also attack private swimming pools.

4. I find it hard to believe that any DUer could defend this idiocy.
But on second thought, I sorrowfully find it all too easy to believe.

9. Are you suggesting that the folks from NC
have a problem, that the rest of the country does not have, that should limit where/when they carry?

WA state allows for CCW during pickup/dropoff; has not caused any problems here.

13. But facts don't matter when it comes to guns!
Only hyperbole backed up by the weakest anecdotal evidence matters, as well as gut feelings and "common sense" of course! We have no time for statistical data and other higher forms of evidence and logic! Not if we're going to save the children!!!!!!!!!!

:sarcasm:

10. It says pick up and drop off
It says nothing about entering the building or athletic events. Such absurd hyperbole are one of the things (that and denigrating blue collar and rural people by suburbanites) are among the things that push people to vote "against their best interests". Also, heat of the moment violence is almost nonexistent among people who do not have a history of such behavior.
